He will indeed incite more and more violence in the attempt to avoid accountability. And he's given catalysts to an authoritarian leaning minority, which will pose an enduring danger long after his cheeseburgers take him out.

The next 10 years, possibly even the next 30, will be a real crisis period. I don't know with any certainty that the various democracies we've lived in over our lives will all make it.

Calm yourself Ron. His time at the top is done. Prosecutors are doing everything to ensure that the first prosecution is successful. They want to nail him just as much as you do. And I noted today that #uckhead carlson was talking about how shaky the economy is looking under Biden. I guess he couldn't find any other current events worth talking about He's another scumbag with blood on his hands who needs to do some serious jail time. JayInOz

God help us all! Tomf, are you suggesting that he will become a "martyr for the cause" if/when he checks out naturally?

More a patron Saint. A man of ever inflated and hyperbolic memory. I think there should be expected that when he has a stroke or coronary related to eating like a four year old, his followers will conclude that Biden had him killed, or Soros, or whatever.

I'm more concerned that someone else will pick up the torch, and have fewer personal intellectual limitations. So be effective, rather than blessedly incompetent.

I wish someone with a microphone would remind his supporters that he COULD have pardoned those who stormed the Capital, but chose not to. It's not as if he wasn't president for two weeks after that day. Such a reminder would deflate his promise to pardon them if elected again.

I'll bet that Trump is wishing he had pardoned Michael Cohen, Trump's former junk-yard dog lawyer. He'll be the chief witness against Trump. If Trump had pardoned Cohen, he wouldn't go against Trump. But, there is no honor amongst thieves, so Cohen (one criminal) will betray Trump (the other criminal).

What makes you think his supporters would listen to reason?

Here is how these people think.... Yesterday Elon Musk tweeted: "Free Jacob Chansley." Chansley, aka the "QAnon Shaman," was sentenced to 41 months in prison for his role in the Capital riot. Now Twitter is blowing up with others demanding that Chansley be freed.

Never mind that he pleaded guilty.

Coincidentally a radio programme on just that premise begun just as I read this post.
Our RW is attempting to go in this direction, but lost big time to independents in the last Fed election, and put a centre left government in office. As an opposition they are ineffective, and the Greens have more or less become the effective opposition.

Your problem is your electoral model as much as anything else.

There's a state park named for him in New York - but that predates his presidency.

Trump bought the 400 acre property for 2.5 million back in 1998 to build a golf course that never happened. He donated it to NYS in 2006 and wrote it off as a $100,000,000 tax write off. NYS never really did anything with it, and it is largely an abandoned site with overgrown parking lots and crumbling buildings covered in graffiti.
    Fits Trump to perfection.

Maybe someone should organize an outing with some cadaver dogs to look for old family members or former bs associates, just in case.

Meanwhile, the jurisdiction could designate it a household junk disposal site, and when it catches on, and the pile of discarded shirt, old sofas and entertainment centers, dishwashers etc, gets high and deep, then put up a sign commemorating the tRMP DMP. Big letters, cheap wooden sign. Gold lettering. And another smaller sign indicating there's a notary public in back.

Michael Cohen reckons that Jared Kushner may have flipped and is working with the FBI. Great that he's turned on the orange traitor- not so great if he's done a deal and avoided charges himself.

@ the thread in general: I'd be willing to make a large bet that Trump never, ever gets a minute of jail time. I'd love to lose that bet, but everyone that should be going after him is either too scared of him/his supporters or too scared of a precedent. Seems to me that jailing a crook is a good precedent - no matter what office he held - but what do I know...

Time will tell. I suspect one problem is that any random group of 12 people is apt to have a couple of strong Trump supporters on it. I could be wrong.

Wheels of justice turn slowly. Perhaps too slowly. I saw a piece the other day where the persistent prosecutor in Ga. may not have time to finish her work. GOP has taken over enough of gov. to get rid of her.

The only way he won't do time is if he dies before the trials are concluded. If it's soon I would still call that a success Prosecutors are actually fairly determined to nail him. The biggest problem with precedent seems to be trying to set up the charges so that future republican "governments" can't use it as payback in bringing charges against political rivals and enemies. You guys really do need a good purge over there JayInOz

One of Trump's criminal defense attorneys, Joe Tacopina, appeared the other night on MSNBC to be interviewed by Ari Melber (himself an attorney) regarding the Stormy Daniels hush money payment and a possible campaign finance indictment.

My main impression is that Joe appeared to have dipped into Don Jr.'s cocaine stash prior to appearing on the program.

    Good for New York.

    Where's the Georgia indictment?

Where's the indictment for Jan. 6?

Sorry to bring on the negativity, but an indictment for illegal business activity, even a felony indictment as this probably is, is not what the U.S. needs to preserve our institutions and the rule of law. It's not enough.

This is the first Tom but certainly not the last. He will be convicted for this, for January 6 and they will pin his flabby arse to the wall for the Mar a Lago documents. It could be a long list of charges- threats, bribes, tax evasion, theft and mutilation of documents, witness tampering, all the way up to sedition, conspiracy and treason. Personally I'd be happy to see him die in jail for the thousands lives lost because of his lies and mis information regarding covid, but that doesn't seem to be in the pipeline. ^ All of this.

'They' should get 'the book,' the one in the old expression, use a highlighter to block out all the laws that trmp broke, make an asterisk for each one, with a number, and in an appendix, list each asterisked crime, with a description of the indictment, the judgement, the sentence. At the end of each annotated crime and conviction, put a check box and a number denoting how many other presidents broke it and were convicted.

    Call it the yellow book.

Make an oversized, ceremonial edition, gold embossed, with tassels, and mount it on an ornate chestnut stand. Next to the book on the stand, they should build a small vestibule with a large screen video loop of a reading of the charges, the pleas, the judgements and sentences. Also note how old trmp would've been if he'd lived long enough to serve the entire sentence.

And install all of that in a small stone building, like a rest-stop, with restrooms on each side, on The Mall in DC, and carved into a brown toned painted wooden sign at the head of small gravel parking area—trmp Presidential Library. Next to the sign, a small plaque with a dedication, acknowleging the range of trmp's victims while in office.

Yannow, one of these days, in the lives of our children or grandchildren, there will be college courses and degree programs for historian types to study all things trmp—specialties in the trmpian effect on foreign affairs, diplomacy, domestic and foreign economic legacies, the threat to national and global democratic institutions.

There's gonna be, guaranteed, movies that are about him and all his villainous career, the various names of key figures in his downfall, will become worked into the lexicon, the way the Watergate hotel was the lexical genesis of the use of 'gate' to denote any serious government or political scandal. Please, please, please, don NOT call this trmp-gate. trmp is orders of magnitude more notorious for his villainy, and makes Nixon look almost like an honorable statesman.

One of the advantages of all these charges from different jurisdictions, seems to me, is that it's less likely that some judge will rule that sentences for different crimes should run concurrently. Whatever the impact of the Georgia cases, they're separate from the Manhattan cases, separate from the Mar a Lago documents, etc etc. There's no justification, imo, for having the consequences of any of those convictions, should they come, being nullified because Trump was already experiencing a consequence for something else which was also illegal, but entirely unrelated.

I mean, if you get cancer from smoking and diabetes for eating like a 4 year old, you don't get some judicial accommodation to only have to deal with diabetes just because you smoked and bathed in sugar syrup at the same time.

So, let's hope that the Secret Service, FBI, and other law enforcement agencies are aware that the MAGAs could, maybe, possibly, be chatting with each other online about how to heed Trump's call for protests. And that they're gonna be armed. Wouldn't want any agencies to be caught unawares because someone didn't brief up, or memos weren't shared, or etc.

While we're at it, let's just assume that there will be requests for sharing communications among law enforcement agents, Secret Service agents, etc. So let's postpone any "planned migrations" of software or hardware on any of those devices or systems, and any wiping of the same, till a very long, long time from now.

Trump Says His Arrest Is Imminent and Calls for Protests, Echoing Jan. 6

By Maggie Haberman, Alan Feuer, Jonah E. Bromwich and Ben Protess
    March 18, 2023

With his indictment by a Manhattan grand jury expected but its timing uncertain, former President Donald J. Trump declared on his social media site Saturday that he would be arrested on Tuesday, and demanded that his supporters protest on his behalf.

Mr. Trump made the declaration on Truth Social at 7:26. a.m., in a post written in all capital letters that ended by saying, “THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!”

I suspect Trump is lying and actually has no idea what will happen on Tuesday. But he is frightened and wants to get his MAGA mob ramped up prior to any potential indictment.

And Kevin McCarthy is responding by claiming any such charges are an abuse of power, and that he'll immediately start an investigation into whether there's been election interference putting these obviously Extreme Dem prosecutors in office.

Before the charges are even made known, so he can't actually know what he says is an abuse of power.
