Needed a little reminder of blue skies and flat seas after the last couple of days of winter gales. / Jim

It is an old Jesuit mission in Idaho, and yes, the Jesuits named their doorknobs.

Was that boat at the Mystic festival one year?

At least, one year there was a big cold-molded offshore boat on the bulkhead.

    It is composite. Made in-house.

A fine bit o' molding, that.

And to keep Tom company, here's a bit of 108-y-o marine hardware:

Yes, but not at the moment. It is my current project - it is undergoing it's ten-year haul-out & refit in Shelburne, NS. I have been hired to be the museum's on-site technical representative.

    Sounds like a great project!

There are myriad creeks that kerf Long Islands south shore. These bubble up as springs from the aquifer and flow out of the terminal moraine, a 200-400 foot high ridge left by the Wisconsin glacier 20,000 years ago. They run, like all waters, to the sea. Here is Phillips Creek on a late October morning.

Stacked one on top of the other like layers in a cake, three major and one minor aquifer make up the Long Island aquifer system. In sequence from shallowest to the deepest, the Long Island aquifers are: the Upper Glacial, the Magothy and the Lloyd Aquifers. All Long Island aquifers receive their fresh water from precipitation which takes from 25 to 1,000 years to migrate through the layers to the aquifers, which hold roughly 70 trillion US gallons (260 km3), enough to flood the entire surface of Long Island with more than 300 feet (90 m) of water, and can withstand long droughts that could dry up surface water reservoirs, like the ones that supply New York City.

Oh, very cool. I remember looking standing on the dock in Halifax, and reading about it. One photo struck me, of the evening meal in the mess, and the conversations there, after a day spent surveying somewhere on the coast.

That must have been a fun trip in that boat, from Halifax to Shelburne by water.
