Buy a hive Bernadette! I've got a couple on order. (Actually I had two triple deck hives on order from an old timer I volunteered with at the local museum for years, but he went down hill really fast with dementia and in the end didn't even remember who I was, so I've re-ordered from an old school chum who also keeps bees). You don't need to do anything with them if you don't want to, just set them up out of strong winds and where they won't be in your face all the time. Or buy native stingless bees- they are available. Another lovely sunset. I thank my wife every time I pull into our driveway for pushing to buy this lot...

The moon came up this morning about 45 mins before the sun. I wanted to get it fully orange, but when I got to where I could see it, it was already beginning to lose color.

I'm looking for a less noisy processor. Time to move on up to the next camera.

We're in the Lee of Cliff island, getting backed onto the rocks by the backwind/eddy. Nice swim spot.

Saturday at Seal Beach, south side of pier. Northwest ground swell had the beach pumping, waves were overhead and hollow. Water temperature about 58 degrees F.

10 am owls. Ruru. These are the two chicks/fledgelings we've been monitoring, first time I've seen them out and about. Been away for a week.20210114_095212.jpg

^^"ruru" is a great name for an owl species.

here is today's "cow's eye view" (in b&w because they don't have the rods and cones or something.)

Did you ever hear about Mary Temple Grandin
a prominent proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior. She is a consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior, and an autism spokesperson. She is one of the first individuals on the autism spectrum to document the insights she gained from her personal experience of autism. She is currently a faculty member with Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State University.

no, the name is familiar but i haven't read anything that i am aware of.

you may have surmised that my alley and squeeze chute are designed to make handling for veterinary care safe and relatively low stress for all parties involved. it's a bit over elaborate considering the small scale of my operations but i felt compelled to do it.

LW, there was a movie made about Temple-Grandin that was very good. You can probably see it on Netflix - it is worth it even if you don't raise cattle. Here's a promo for the film:

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

aha, likely her name sounded familiar because i have run across a reference in reading "how to" essays on cattle handling. the idea of a curved alley to a squeeze is apparently one of her innovations. too bad i didn't put in the swimming pool.

Oh, this picture gives me big time nostalgic flashbacks. I can still crack a whip, mind, a skill I learned from my Great Uncle Bob, my namesake.
I am probably one of the few people to actually ride a cow while herding cattle with a dog and whip, but maybe not.

I rode around on a sweet older Guernsey called “Bessie”. When she died, I cried. What? Don’t teenaged boys always cry when they get that telephone call?

That just sounds made up as hell, now I read it. The dog was called “Rocky”. I use the “come to” whistle on my kids, still.

Oh, man. The pigs were my people. My brother used to train them up for FFA, and we always had a few of the personable types we treated like dogs.

For a while, my cousins (girls) had a St. Bernard and a pig as pets. They’d ride around in their mom’s Fairlane convertible with Baby hanging out one side of the back and Suzy Q Pig out the other.

Also, I didn’t get tall until after 8th grade. I grew something like 9” in half year. I got stretch marks from it!

I grew 9" in my 8th grade school year - 11" in the whole year. I was so uncoordinated I literally could not dribble a basketball 3 times in a row. Of course none of the other kids made fun of me...

Daughter is currently experiencing round two of severe knee and hip pains. She did hers in several spurts over a few years, but she’s on another jag.
    She hopes it’s her last.

Being 6’+ ain’t all that snazzy for a lady.

I broke my right tib/fib that summer, and the X-rays showed bird bones! Hahah. You could actually see the rapid growth in parts of the bones where they were almost, but not quite, porous like a sponge. It was wild to see.
