Not featured, but my Lincolnville Salmon Wherry was in the Launchings section of Issue #269, and they gave me a nice WB cap with Launchings WB No.169 embroidered on it, which I wear proudly.

My boats don't warrant an article in WBM, but I have had my 16' Rushton canoe and Palmer fantail launch featured in the Launching section. Back in the 1990's, they also mentioned my 20' Stadel gaff-rigged pilot sloop. My Hvalsoe13 had a one page mention in the annual printed issue of Small Boats a while back.

My hat is issue #266, only worn on Sundays so it will last.

My Coquina, Slipper, made the cover of Small Boats Monthly in November of 2016. My friend John Hartmann wrote an account of the 2-boat sail & oar cruise he and I took around Deer Isle, ME, following that summer's Small Reach Regatta. That's as close as I've gotten.

My boat was mentioned (& described incorrectly) in an article about Ben Seaborn.

I hope she'll be in relaunchings next year, but we'll see...

I had a couple of my technical drawings published in the magazine as part of someone else's article - does that count?

Hey - I ID'd the Seaborn boat for you a month or so ago... Have you been hitting the sauce as hard as those guys had?

A nice hat, a free issue of the magazine and a Proud Builder of Wooden Boats bumper sticker for the car.

My Caledonia Yawl was featured in the local savings bank’s calendar. June, so the centerfold. My friend got $100 for the picture, didn’t even take me out for lunch.

I've had a couple of my builds included in calendars.

I didn’t know you got a free hat if you’re in launchings. Never occurred to me to submit. Next time.

    Been in Small Boats.

My wife Jan had her first ARTICLE in WB Sep/Oct issue. "Safest Man on the Planet"
WB tends to use the same writers/illustraters/photographers over and over and over again, in case you had not noticed, so it is not easy to break in.
So...Jan beat me up there as my boats never ever had even a teeny mention.
That said, I do not put my sail covers on tightly enough for anchorages in Maine.

Nope, I used non-WB approved tools in my restoration. Translation, I used tools other than my checkbook/credit card and did the work myself. Based on restoration articles I have seen in WB, I don't meet their requirements.

    Well, that's pretty cynical.

What WoodenBoat is interested in, in my experience, is far less prescriptive and doctrinaire than you seem to assume. It's always easier to assume an air of cynicism than it is to make the attempt to persuade an editor that what you have to say is worth their time. And that you have the skills to say it in a way that would be worthy of publication.

Every single writer ever published in WoodenBoat has had to go through that process. Those who gave up before they succeeded? Their work doesn't appear in print.

And you know that because you put together a detailed proposal for an article based on your experience, along with a selection of high-quality photos and a demonstration of reasonable skill in writing, and they turned you down?

No Tom, I know it because my wife has . She has many of her photos and articles in Classic Boat, a few covers even. She could not get published in WB until we met Matt in Antigua a few years ago. It's just a hobby she began after retiring.
I do not seek to publish writing or photos except here.
But HAVING my work or boats ,MY style of work, is not their cuppa.
I think that might be what Todd alluded to.
The people they work with is a very exclusive club.
But cynical...ho yea...I'm cynical most de time.
