I have not played chess since my grandfather died in 1984 or 85. His chess set, which someone in the family has, was 'souveniered' in China during the Boxer Rebellion by his older brother. Ebony and Ivory,

Really liking The Queen's Gambit of course, but I know my limitations. Too undisciplined a mind to do all the slogging work to become a good chess player.

Sadly, Herself used to be pretty good, and her father is awesome. Just how his damned big brain works, which isn't fair. Intimidating though for schlubs with my "skills."

I made a fairly rough set for camping purposes a few years ago. It started as a checker set, but I eventually freehanded some chess pieces to go with it. All but the board fit into a small tin for travel. I've used it camping on a river sandbar and in several cabins in the hills of sw Missouri and nw Arkansas. I find that I have to teach people to play, much of the time. Though, I'm not particularly good at it, myself. Just that not many else in my social circles seem to have learned to play growing up. I also have an all ivory set my stepfather got in se Asia when he was in the Navy during the Vietnam War, but that set mostly gathers dust.

Read that after 'the queens gambit', chess sets have been flying off the retail shelves. I expect the female lead has a lot to do with that.

Similarly, I saw a recent NYTimes story on how Martin guitars are made - and noticed, in their archives, that same storyline 'seems to come up' every year about this time. Marketing.

Spent one summer in my youth working the Slime Line in Alaska.

My buddies and I made a wilderness Backgammon game. The board was carved into the top of a stump in our camp. The ‘men’ were round flat stones vs. flat slices of a stick that were cut with the saw on my Swiss Army knife. Dice were carved wood. Once a week we would hitchhike to the local Dairy Queen and settle up all debt (and Backgammon losses). Our ‘currency’ of exchange was a Dipped Ice cream cone.

Have any of you played much with designs other than Staunton? A friend had an agate set that was designer inspired. It was a bitch to play with, I felt it gave him an advantage because he was used to it.
