Take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time
    Far past the frozen leaves
    The haunted frightened trees
    Out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
    With one hand waving free
    Silhouetted by the sea
    Circled by the circus sands
    With all memory and fate
    Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

I read bad poetry into your machine
I save your messages just to hear your voice
You always listen carefully to awkward rhymes
You always say your name like I wouldn't know it's you
    At your most beautiful

I never knew a man could tell so many lies
He had a different story for every set of eyes
How can he remember who he's talking to?
'Cause I know it ain't me, and hope it isn't you

After many years I discovered my favorite Tom Petty lyric was a mondegreen.

What is a mondegreen? From Wikipedia:

A mondegreen/ˈmɒndɪɡriːn/ is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase in a way that gives it a new meaning. Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song; the listener, being unable to clearly hear a lyric, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense. American writer Sylvia Wrightcoined the term in 1954, writing that as a girl, when her mother read to her from Percy's Reliques, she had misheard the lyric "layd him on the green" in the fourth line of the Scottish ballad "The Bonny Earl of Murray" as "Lady Mondegreen". "Mondegreen" was included in the 2000 edition of the Random House Webster's College Dictionary, and in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2002. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary added the word in 2008.

    Etymology

In a 1954 essay in Harper's Magazine, Wright described how, as a young girl, she misheard the last line of the first stanza from the seventeenth-century ballad The Bonnie Earl O' Moray. She wrote:

When I was a child, my mother used to read aloud to me from Percy's Reliques, and one of my favorite poems began, as I remember:
    Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,iCloud
    Oh, where hae ye been?
They hae slain the Earl o' Moray,
    And Lady Mondegreen.

The correct fourth line is, "And laid him on the green".

Wright explained the need for a new term: "
The point about what I shall hereafter call mondegreens, since no one else has thought up a word for them, is that they are better than the original."
The mondegreen is from the first verse of Runnin' Down A Dream. For years I thought the lyric was:

    It was a beautiful day
    the sun beat down
    I had the radio on
    I was drivin'
    Trees went by
    me and Del were singin'
    Little runaway
    I was sublime

I discovered that the actual last line is: "I was flyin'."

Why is it a mondegreen to my mind? Because the mistake seems to me to be superior to the original.

I said, where you wanna eat
    7 days a week
    Thick and juicy
    And a extra large drink

    Yeah yeah yeah yeah
You eating up some thick and juicy
Bring your mom and your pop for this thick and juicy
Don't cost everything you got for this thick and juicy

Order it up, bigger, small to large
    Extra charge for extra large
Put this Whopper right in yo face
Drips on you clothes, like it so far
Light ice is nice, Fries on the side
Put that extra Whopper sauce inside
Put it in my mouth, satisfied
This whopper is legit give it a try
    Customers lined up, driving by
When your on lunch, time flies
You don't want no Big Mac junk
Throw that **** in the garbage
You want ice cream we got ice cream
This ain't MD dont make a scene
    Not asleep, not a dream
So enjoy a meal, fit for a king ( All Hail )

Gobble it, swallow it, gonna want all of it
Loose your belt quick so you can fit all of it
Its to go so stuff that bag to fit, A tea an a coke dont forget
Cause'n I get home I won't here the end of it

I had to stop here, my brain was bleeding from studying that stupid song so much.

I'm sitting down by the highway
    Down by that highway side
    Everybody's going somewhere
Riding just as fast as they can ride
I guess they've got a lot to do
    Before they can rest assured
    Their lives are justified
Pray to God for me baby
    He can let me slide

    I've been up
    And down this highway
Far as my eyes can see
No matter how fast I run
    I can never seem
    To get away from me
    No matter where I am
    I can't help thinking
    I'm just a day away
From where I want to be
    Now I'm running home baby
Like a river to the sea

Baby if you can see me
    Out across this wilderness
    There's just one thing
I was hoping you might guess
    Baby you can free me
    All in the power of
    Your sweet tenderness

I followed the sound of a jukebox coming from up the levee
All of a sudden, I could hear somebody whistling from right behind me
I turned around, and she said
"Why do you always end up down at Nick's Cafe?"
I said, "Uh, I don't know, the wind just kinda pushed me this way"
    She said, "Hang the rich"

I had to go back to view it in recent years, it originally blew by me before I was into Jackson Browne: The scene in Taxi Driver playing Late for the Sky on American Bandstand on TV, Bickle watching late at night. To me, the scene said everything about the movie. Not the effects of PTSD, but rather the effects of social isolation, before that was as common a term as it is now.

By the way, on youtube there are some tremendous videos of Browne and David Lindley doing an acoustic show in Philly I think, just the two of them. Great acoustic version of Mercury Blues, among others. Will blow you away.
