I spent a year in Champaign, Illinois as a research fellow at U of I. Great university, but the town was, shall we say, less great. A friend lived near the edge of town. No one there had a lawn because of over spray of herbicides on the corn fields that came right up to the edge of town. Corn on the cob was cheap though. Hot muggy summer and cool winter (note - I moved there from Northern Alberta, so my sense of "cool" weather may have been a bit different from standard US feelings about cool weather).

There used to be a lot of this going on in Chicago, around Maxwell Street Market - I suppose it's pretty much gone now?
