Not cheap either but of heirloom quality, in the event you have (or plan on having descendant(s) you can leave them to once you're done with 'em:

Funny that is it the same word for the tool and aircraft.
I liked the small tricks he used. Like rubbing chalk into the cut from the marking knife.

I've built a few planes, the woodworking kind that is, several round and hollow mouthed spar planes and a nice little rebate plane. Not anywhere near the same quality though, more a case of "damn, how'm I goin to round, or hollow as the case sometimes was, this off. Where's that chunk of beech, and that old horse hoof file, and in a couple of hours I'm back to the job with a plane built just for that. They're not elegant, thats not the point, they work, and that is.

It doesn't mean that I don't admire what that man that Max found does, I do, I just need to get on with the job so I can sail the new boat.

When I apprenticed as a spar maker, we often would make wood bodied planes out of beech to fit the curve of the mast shape for hollowing and finishing the outer and inner surfaces. This was oftern done as not all masts required the same shaped tools.

He's an amazing machinist . I could relate more to the Aussie's web site :no metal lathe ; scrounged on ebay and plumbing shops for parts(speaking of his wood routing plane for instance ). That's stuff I might ,possibly , do .
