CVG western red cedar strip plank lumber

Ouch! Just got a quote for a pile of CVG WRC, the stock is in 2x6 sold by the linear foot mostly 16 footers but a few 8s and 20s mixed in to round out the order.

I live in Alaska no where near a mill and this will be barged up from WA state. Curious what folks are paying in the lower 48 for similar stock. I may shop around a little down south and then reach out to Alaska Marine Lines to ship it up if it would be worth while.

Looking for current prices not when I bought WRC in 1982. The market is pretty worked up right now, lots of volatility so price quotes are only good for a week.

Depending on the size of the strips, they might be gotten from flat sawn 2x6.

12 bux for a lineal foot of 2 by 6....yeow.
but yes, maybe just get a larger lump of less than perfect wood.
Are you building a carvel yacht or an epoxy boat?

im going to be milling into one inch strips the boat plans call for regular strip planking, I plan to use epoxy between strips and most likely dynel sheathing on the exterior.

Alaska yellow cedar around here is even harder to come by. Mill is in Hoonah, gets shipped to Seattle then back up north. Honestly working with yelllow cedar is hard on me, we use it at work for ground contact and weather in place forget about them for 30 years structures, but that stuff makes me cry like onions and opens my nose up like Vick’s vapor rub.

Well, As you are building an epoxy stripper, might a decent local spruce work?

You are right when it comes to being sensitive to cedar oil. I have a filter that has a fan to first filter the air I breath as I am a singer and can't afford end up with sinus problems.

Clear WRC KD S4S 4x4 8 footers at the lumber yard here in the Gulf Islands go for at least $8/BF.

AD WRC CVG planking grade and dimensions over at West Wind over in Sidney goes for $12/BF. AYC same grade for $14/BF.

So what are you building and how do you propose to get 1 inch VG out of 2 inch VG without wasting 60%? You could get 1" thick by 1 7/8 S4S out of flat grain, but that would be pretty wide strips. More specific info would be helpful.

The cedar is for a 6500lbs catboat which calls for 1 inch strips. The stock is 1.5 inches x 5.5 inches more than likely with eased edges. I’m thinking knocking the edges off one side. Ripping the boards 1 inch then ripping again would give good plank stock and a pile of thin strips to use for a dingy, hatches, a kayak or whatever. Figuring 11 kerfs worth per board ending up in the dust pan. I don’t really know how bad that is, I’ve never planked with more than 3/4 inch thick stock and all I had to do was rip the boards into strips then rotate for the best grain orientation.

Maybe I should just give up, build a plywood boat or maybe go whole hog foam sandwich.

Seriously, thanks for the idea on pricing, I’m pretty use to paying through the nose for stuff up here but sometimes it’s hard to tell how bad or good a deal your getting when there is only one source of material. It’s way better here than when I used to live in a bush town.......1 dollar a pound for everything coming in on the barge and everything but produce came in on the barge (only game in town and only 7 or 8 per year).

You've done this before.
If you are ripping and turning for best orientation anyway,you have no reason to buy vertical grain.
