Pathetic admission of marketing susceptibility (gullibility) here ....

Every time I see a Leica, my immediate thought is - I could take great pictures with that.

And then I wake back up and slap myself.

Well, it’s their own fault that they’re poor.

There are Panasonic Lumix digital cameras with Leica optics that are reasonably priced.

Hello Rick, From your comments you may never used a leica camera, I had put over 1000 rolls through my M6 before mine was stolen along with the 5 lenses. It never has been put into a Leica agent for repair as the camera was on their data base. I would purchase a new Leica at the drop of a hat if I could afford one.

I'm a convert to digital photography. So much simpler to edit and file.

At the very least, it prevents the waste of all those rolls of plastic film I used to burn through and keep only a few pictures.

Somewhere in storage I have a Leica bronze belt buckle, oval, not too large, Leica in elegant script, tasteful. It's the only Leica I own. Most of my gear was Nikon F. I should say, IS, I still have everything. In storage. I guess good for paperweights now.

Well, you're right, I've never owned or used a Leica. The point is that I think my photos would be ordinary whether I used a Leica, a Canon D2 or a Kodak Brownie!

Very sorry to hear that you had a Leica stolen! I hate thieves!

I can't seem to determine online:

Were Leica rangefinder cameras a focal-plane shutter or iris shutter? I would expect the Leicaflex (SLR) models to be the former.

The Nikon F was famous for a ball-bearing and titanium-foil shutter mechanism good for minimum 100,000 cycles. I'd be curious if that was copied from the earlier Leicas.

Hi Rick, I now have a digital Leica camera. I think that the main difference with the Leica camera is the quility of the lens that come with the camera. I have used my M6 for work, I did a survey in Indonesia using a roll of film at each of the 450 sties across Java. The results of the survey was used for the next 5 years for the project. Bruce

When I was working in Vietnam I bought a fair bit of camera gear and nearly bought a little Leica digital, compact. I ended up buying a Lumix and I've been happy with that. I seem to remember the Lumix or similar had Leica optics? Whether that achieves Leica quality images or not, I have no idea.

    Focal plane, horizontal cloth.

The interesting shutter is the rotating titanium job that Maitani designed for the Pen F - sync to 1/500.

I inherited a Leica M2 from from Aunt years ago along with 35mm, 50mm, 90mm and 135mm Leica lenses. You have to learn how to use it and carry an external light meter (or one attached to the top of the camera and then you cant close the case) but if you know what you are doing you can take amazing pictures. It is light and very quiet to operate. That reminds me I need to go get some film.

leica was famous for a cloth focal plane shutter that was quieter, but less durable.
