Hi all, I was wondering if any one could comment on the sail rig Matt Laydon had on his WaterTribe Rob Royoid canoe. I'm putting together a similar Watertribe Class 1 boat (The hull is unfortunately glass, but I promise to make wood spars), in hopes that the OkoumeFest Challenge will return to the Chesapeake, and would like to have an effective 1 meter down wind sail. I was thinking of prototyping the sail with tyvek, and and then makeing a finished sail out of Cuben fiber and adhesive tape. The actual shaping of the sail is the biggest mystery to me.

Here's a pretty good picture of the sail.

I have found info from Matt L. describing another of his Water tribe rigs

I'm not sure I need the ability to furl a one meter sail, and ascetically I prefer the Rob Royoid rig. I'm not 100% committed to the WaterTribe racing classes, but the criteria seems reasonable for pokeing out into open water safely. I certainly prefer Matt Laydens designs to a lot of the other plumbers nightmare of bolted on aluminum and carbon fiber. Thanks, Woody

Matts design is proven and looks like I could copy it for a lot less than the $500 commercially available options. Thanks, Woody
