Looks like an RAF target towing launch from WWII.

Link below (if it works) shows a google streetview image on one that is on the shore at Hythe Marina, UK:

Some sort of workboat or tender. Could be military. The ASB registration is interesting - could be an Australian Shipping Board vessel, so prior to about 1963. just guessing.

I've looked around at military boats of that era and all the registration numbers are pretty literal. I think it could be ex-military and was used by the Aust Shipping Board or was a service vessel built for the Board.

Thanks all, was thinking military but locally I get negative responces. Here is the only other photo I have, not its best angle.

edit. bit more googling found the second photo described as "ex Naval launch near Aircraft museum" unfortunately not dated or located,
edit more geeking following up on suggestions above. this could be a 38' Halverson fast rescue boat from WW2, if anyone can confirm?

Could be an old Standard Randombuilt.

I suggest calling the Maritime Museum. The hull build certainly looks Halvorsen, the setup looks military and I think the ASB is the Shipping Board. The AMM ought to be able to confirm or explode!

This is one of the three known remaining Halverson's. Diagonal planked and same silhouette to my eyes. Ill contact the Australia Museum which is based near here and see if its theirs or if they know of it before some little ...... sets fire to it.
