Well he would say that, but we'll see. If as reported the material was taken off an abandoned freighter for 'safety reasons' some time ago they mad a serious miscalculation. And even if it was an attack, why leave such a target in the middle of the city?

Was it an accident or an attack? Probably an accident, but blowing that stuff up as a terrorist attack is a possibility. But.... a responsible president would keep his big fat mouth shut until the intelligence agencies could determine it one way or the other. Not Trump. He just blurts out whatever he thinks will help him and fire up his base.

They were storing explosives there for 6 years. Is that what you do in a war zone? Don't you put it in a secure location with military guards and such?

Reminds me of the Halifax Explosion in 1917 , two ships collided in the harbor one full of ammunition . Many people went to their windows to see one of the ships on fire in the harbor , causing hundreds to be blinded from the blast that blew the windows in . The size of the blast estimated to be 2.9 kilotons of TNT (12,000 GJ)

Ammonium nitrate on its own stored correctly is not very dangerous according to wikipedia but stored incorrectly .... look out . It is well known for use in explosives. Mines use it all the time as it is cheap and works well . I have used it a bit working on a blasting crew building roads , it wouldn't give you a headache like nitro-based dynamite .

Some good info on the issue here

    https://www.dnrme.qld.gov.au/__data/...port-final.pdf

That truck was carrying over 50 tons of ammonia nitrate and the explosion caused significant damage.

The silo stood up remarkably well. I’ve read it shielded part of the city to some degree.

Interesting the buildings immediately adjacent (on the other side) are still gone.

    stored for seven years

    https://www.moonofalabama.org/2020/0...p-up.html#more

Lebanon's LBCI-TV reported on August 5 that, according to preliminary information, the fire that set off the explosion was started accidentally by welders who were closing off a gap that allowed unauthorized entry into the warehouse.
LBCI said sparks from a welder's torch are thought to have ignited fireworks stored in a warehouse, which in turn detonated the nearby cargo of ammonium nitrate that had been unloaded from the MV Rhosus years earlier.

Independent experts say orange clouds that followed the massive blast on August 4 were likely from toxic nitrogen dioxide gas that is released after an explosion involving nitrates.

One might get nervous knowing we have a president who makes things up all the time tossing about misinformation and disinformation while simultaneously praising and undermining military intelligence. Good thing nothing urgent is going on in the nation.

Did that ship to the right of the crater get blown out of the water on to the wharf?

It looks like three ships are missing. Judging by that crater I would surmise they were blown to bits. Or they had departed before the blast. How long before the explosion is the first picture?

I can’t imagine the engineering that would have gone into designing them to have that wall remain after the blast.

Early twitter videos showed bodies and bits of bodies all over the ground as someone flimed going towards the blast area. Thankfully now deleted (I hope).

Wonder how many huge stocks of ammonium nitrate there are in Texas and other Gulf states? There was a big blast in 2013 that pretty much levelled a town.

30 tons AN West Texas / 800 tons Tianjin Harbour / 2750 tons AN in Beirut.

The Orica factory in Newcastle (Oz) has over four times the amount stored there as went bang in Beirut.

Looking at those pictures it is hard to believe there were not many more dead. Were there no dock workers, ship crews, etc., present at the time of the explosion?

It is also interesting how that ship got tossed onto the wharf in one piece. Good construction, I reckon.

I'm reading there may be 200,000 made homeless by this. I'm hoping all outside aid is being coordinated and fast. Our military leaders are competent, but I don't know if they'll be given a green light by Trump. In my opinion, needs in immediate order, depending on survey of local resources:
    - medical aid, mostly trauma treatment
    - drinking water, this can get critical so fast
    - sanitation, to prevent disease
    - shelter, it's summer and at sea level in the Mediterranean so nighttime temperatures are comfortable for now, fortunately, but get tents and blankets there anyway
    - food
When you can take the pebble from my hand, it will be time for you to leave.
