    Default South China Sea

    Mike Pompeo's statement just now.

I do wish that we had some other administration in office which could inspire even a minute particle of trust that they'd think things through on this very important file.

China's ambitions have never been a joke.

I'm surprised this hasn't garnered more interest. It seems to me that a mis-step could easily result in some shots fired, especially with the crowd at the helm right now. On both sides of the argument.

Too late, way too late. I imagine it would require quite a lot of serious shooting to dissuade China from it's Sth China Seas claims, and they will continue to expand. Xi cannot afford to back down, and Chinese nationalism is rampant as a distraction for 40 million unpartnered males.

I agree Art, the term 'bullying' being a bit too close to the bone for the USA's record, and for this president personally.

Hard to stop something that's been going on for decades.

That's why we need to focus on replacing Congress frequently, along with the President.

Let's say you are China. You now stand notified that the US position is hardening. Going forward, either the US will have to back down or China will have to stop occupying the South China Sea, after having made an immense investment in artificial islands and "face".

When would be the best time to have a confrontation? Under Trump? Under Biden? Under an elected Biden and lame-duck Trump?

My spin: perhaps the ideal context for China would be after contested election, with Biden elected but Trump and his base refusing to concede and the US in unprecedented turmoil. I would expect China to do anything it can to support such an outcome.

This is not a message for China, it's a message for the other countries listed in the document. The message is "The USA will support you"

However Trump himself sends a message to these countries as well. That message is "I am a Chinese lapdog"

Under King donald I do not think any sane or competent leader of another country can rely on the US honouring a treaty at all. Of course there's a long history of not honouring treaties with Native Americans, so it wouldn't be a unique situation.

What treaty has Trump broken that wasn’t already broken by the other side?

Sabre rattling. What happened after Iran proved its effectiveness of its missiles on an American base in Iraq, after they were logic enough to to forewarn of the incoming missiles? What would happen if China sent one of your ships down with one of its ship-killer missiles? All out war? There is always someone elses hand up Pompeos backside.....just another puppet.

This, but it’s also a message to China.

The other message Trump sends is “the us is a domestic dumpster fire that can’t help itself”

There’s been a lot of little “accidents” in Iran recently.

China is not Iran, though it might use Iran's help in a confrontation. How much of the USN can Iran pin down in the Gulf to keep the oil flowing?

The US only get 19% of its oil from the Middle East.

...and we up here are your biggest oil supplier (among other things). You'd think that Trump & crew would recognize that fact before they start mouthing off again about re-instituting tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada.

^ Far too much sense. That would also deprive the excuse for having military in the far east to "secure energy" as a national security issue. Some people still believe that BS.
