Another local band I enjoy. Lively, jazzy, dance band. A spinoff from Pink Martini, if I have the story right.

I like Duwayne, he always is smiling. In 2016 at the Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, at about midnight, I was heading back to my chair through the crowd. It was almost totally dark except for light from the stage and I saw someone coming in the opposite direction. When we met and recognized each other, Duwayne stopped and stuck out his hand. We shook hands and went on to our destinations.

Last week was the 50th anniversary of the release of our Elektra Records album. That tends to make one feel pretty old. These days, the digital version is still sold by Wounded Bird Records and I think CD Baby sells the CD version. It's kind of a strange folk opera sort of thing where the songs are all connected. We traveled around for about three years playing it at campus auditoriums before eventually switching over to regular original songs. I bought two Old Town canoes with the original advance from Elektra Records, but we're still waiting to make any more money off of it. It should happen any day now.......

The "reunion tour" was short, consisting of a concert at the place we started and followed by a live radio show in Chicago. A little rusty after a 35-year break, but not too bad and a lot of fun. Then we released three CDs. Our old manager found boxes in his basement full of old studio recordings. The first was really early stuff recorded in a small four-track studio. I was 19 or 20 when most of this stuff was recorded.

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...tjqUzhe9greN58

The second CD was mostly from three or four years later and we had switched to a sixteen-track studio. We were paying for studio time by recording commercial jingles for companies like Kellogg's, Heinz, Arby's. etc. and using the cash to book time to record our own stuff. Some of these were the original five members and some with a couple of new members.

Then after the reunion we recorded a CD by e-mailing tracks back and forth without ever having any face-to-face meetings. Some of the guys recorded their parts on their computers. I did mine on a lap-top-sized 16-track Korg digital recorder that I have. We sent them to one of the guys who has a real studio and he mixed them. It actually worked really well. Our former drummer had a broken leg at the time and couldn't play, so we had to fake the percussion. Our lead guitarist had some sort of drum machine and I could tap out drums on the various keys on my old synthesizer. I can't tell you how tedious and nerve wracking it is to sit there, accurately tapping a single piano key every couple of seconds for three or four minutes straight without screwing up.

My little Korg deck is probably more sophisticated than Elektra Studios in Los Angeles was back in 1972 when we recorded the Elektra album, though the Persian rugs on the floors were pretty neat.

In 1962, after a five-year period during which Richard abandoned rock and roll music for born again Christianity, concert promoter Don Arden persuaded him to tour Europe. During this time, the Beatles opened for Richard on some tour dates. Richard advised the Beatles on how to perform his songs and taught the band's member Paul McCartney his distinctive vocalizations.

I made serious fun of this song when it was played widely ("Take this stinkin' goat") but it is a favorite.

I like Terry, although the last time that I talked to him he was bitching about a lot of folks, while I was helping him load his gear into his van.
