If war is the answer........... it must be a profoundly stupid question.

^ I love the horse leaning up against the wall, just hanging out, all casual-like.

Ben Johnson was another “real cowboy”. Part-Cherokee Indian, born on the Reservation in Oklahoma, an expert rider and horse-breeder, stunt-double – and eventually a movie actor.

I was wondering when someone would mention Ben Johnson. Glen told an interesting story of how he got his start in Hollywood, back when he was training and supplying horses for movies.

Anyway, he may not have reached the noteriety of mr Scott but he's a contender.

Now we are getting somewhere. You can add academy award winner to that bio as well. His "Chris" in SHANE was some of his early, excellent work. He would surprise you with his range.

Low hanging fruit. We've done a pretty job of dancing all around him though.

Tommy Lee Jones was a kick-a$$ as Captain Woodrow Call in Lonesome Dove.

But he was equally kick-a$$ as Pete Perkins in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

    Yep.

The Coen brothers' Jeff Bridges/Hailee Steinfeld/Matt Damon/Josh Brolin, version of True Grit has it all over the John Wayne/Kim Darby/Glen Campbell/Robert Duvall piece of fluff.

The bar scenes in Shane were just so very good. The sound editing of those scenes. Silent, except for a quiet voice or two, a scuffed boot. Nothing but the sounds of the fight(s).

Jack Palance should be mentioned. His Jack Wilson in SHANE makes the film. Entirely.

[QUOTE=twodot;6177353]When I was 19 I was an extra in the scene below, one of the immigrants walking:

Was that near Whiskey Gap ?

This western actor seems like a natural

James Caan made just a few Western films, but his gentle, compassionate, quietly-strong Buck Athern in COMES A HORSEMAN has stuck with me over the years. He gave her room to tell the truth about herself. Then he backed her, ridding them both of their demons.

Farnsworth was in that picture as well.

    No mention of Kevin Costner?

His anti-hero in Open Range was quite good, IMO.

Ever seen Broken Trail with Robert Duvall? That was an excellent western and he was terrific in it.

IMHO any list of the greatest westerns ever made must include The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) starring Henry Fonda and The Gunfighter (1950) starring Gregory Peck.

Or, how about Yul Brynner. He was fabulous in many many western movies. Invitation to a Gunfighter, The Magnificent Seven, Westworld.
