As an English boy in the late Fifties and early sixties the “Wild West” wasn’t “real”. It wasn’t meant to be real. It was always fantasyland. We played “Cowboys and Indians” with cap guns with much enthusiasm. But of course the place didn’t really exist. The scenery was just impossible.

There were black and white western serials, and almost every week, regardless of the story the same position for an ambush, and the same rock outcrop where the villian was caught appeared.
