    Default Novel Coronavirus

    Is now in the US.

    Probably many other places too.

Once again authoritarian China tries to sweep bad news under the carpet. They wasted weeks lying about how it spreads and how many cases there were instead of working to contain it.

One of these days a serious virus made in China may end the climate crisis.

I don't know the back story on this; do they know how/where it developed? And yeah - 'a cure' for humanity may be just around the corner.

Chinese authorities, if you can trust them, say it came from a live fish market. At first they said it didn't spread between humans, and 41 cases, all contained. Then cases appeared in Japan and Thailand, suggesting it was not contained, and they admitted to 300 cases and 3 deaths. But epidemiologists modeled what it would take to get cases so far afield and estimated 1600 cases.

Now there is a case in Washington state, a man who came back from China. Not just arrived. He has been in the US for a week.

The Chinese now admit to 6 deaths, so it must be some times that number.

I can't find the reference - but had seen a headline indicating some healthcare workers were now ill. Easy pass respiratory?

Wuhan is a big place. You won’t find it on old maps; you will find Hankow, Wuchang and Hanyang. They just grew into each other, across the confluence of the Yangtze and the Han rivers. It’s called the Chicago of China but its bigger than Chicago. From brief visits to both, I’d say that’s a fair description of both places and their people.

Anyway, what the .... is a seafood market doing a few hundred miles from the sea?

I have seen it reported as seafood or as live animal market. Also as a seafood market where they sell live animals.

People say the next deadly pandemic is inevitable because of air travel, etc. But these deadly viruses only seem to arise in a few spots on Earth. Coincidentally they are the same spots where people insist on selling in markets the few wild animals remaining on the planet.

Ebola and the like from bush meat markets in some African countries.

SARS and the like from live animal markets in China.

Were it not for just those two groups, how many of these diseases would we have had in the past couple of decades?

Plenty of diseases come from domestic animals too. Bird flu, swine flu, mad cow, many more.

At any rate, I just learned that the one case in america is just a few miles from where I sit and the patient has been traipsing about the neighborhood this week.

I think I'll go wash my hands for good measure...

a wet market - the market where they sell live & dead animals. Not just seafood or poultry or pork.

Contrast to a dry market that sells fabric, etc.

A virus with a long incubation period, add in airborne transmission, and maybe some mutation along the way, and you've got the basis for most every zombie novel.

So we've got one out of three right now.
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”― Mark Twain,

Authorities world wide seem to be taking it very seriously. We are a 'market' awaiting some infection according to some epidemiologists.

The virus was first detected Dec. 31 and was linked to a dirty food market in Wuhan, not far from one of the city’s main train stations, where wild animals including wolf pups and civet cats had been on sale for consumption.

Wild animals crammed into cages next to a train station, and being slaughtered for consumption in dubious sanitary conditions.

    Thanks for the link George.

I visited one in Beijing in the 90s and it was foul.

My point about the distance from the sea is that the fish are (just) alive...

Maybe we’ll see how well all these anti biotics, vaccines, Rx drugs have truly served us?

The last thing we need is an antivaxxer.

But it is safe to say that antibiotics are over used in Chinese agriculture, which is one reason why Chinese antivaxxers are so keen on eating wild animals.

They are certainly overused anytime they are given to animals to be eaten. They are used to make the meat marbled, to make the animal FAT , the farmer fish bigger. Not to make them healthy . Mad cow... mix up dead cows with gmo grain, feed it back to the cow . Yay science!!!

For China unprecedented, and a sign that they know more than they let on as usual and are very concerned.
