I haven't been here for a while, like I need to scroll back to see what pictures were posted.
Today's been one of those winter days on which one enjoys being outdoors in the morning. Temperatures are still above freezing in Berlin, no indications of snow (yet).

I hope everyone is still sane and physically well !
    Cheers!

My tree usually looks like that. Unfortunately, it didn't rain here mostly from June until September.

Is that a Cotoneaster? That's a hard strong wood good for chisel handles etc. I made a Paul Sellers type mallet head from a piece of mine.

Ilex opaca, the American holly, is a species of holly, native to the eastern and south-central United States, from coastal Massachusetts south to central Florida, and west to southeastern Missouri and eastern Texas.

I get that & it does get old. I just haven't found a place I'd rather live + there's the "no, I'm not moving away from the grandkids" thing.

We have a holly tree in our back yard. Every fall the berries look magnificent. By the middle of November the deer have them all eaten.

That's OK - we like looking at the deer in our back yard.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

The nandina (bamboo) in Jim's photo can be poisonous to birds and other animals.

From Wikipedia "All parts of the plant are poisonous, containing compounds that decompose to produce hydrogen cyanide, and could be fatal if ingested. The plant is placed in Toxicity Category 4, the category "generally considered non-toxic to humans"[citation needed], but the berries are considered toxic to cats and grazing animals. Excessive consumption of the berries will kill birds such as cedar waxwings, because they are subject to cyanide toxicosis, resulting in death to multiple individuals at one time.

The berries also contain alkaloids such as nantenine, which is used in scientific research as an antidote to MDMA (ecstasy)."

My parents had it planted behind the house here and I dug it up this spring. That was a very hard job, but I seem to have been successful in getting rid of it..

This isn't photographically a good shot of it, but in this raised bed I built, She planted this bamboo, for a privacy buffer on our side of the fence. The berries aren't quite as bright red as they were in the earlier part of the year. They look just like holly berries. And also sort of like the pyracantha planted at another house I lived in. The latter also has nasty thorns, but on the stems, like a locust. The birds eat the berries, in the spring, IIRC, and something in the berry intoxicates them. They get drunk on pyracantha berries and fly loopy for a while. I wonder if the bright red berries of other species has that effect.

Resin-cast Siddhartha on a cast iron stool, that looks like an infant's high chair, over-looking the non-pond (not pictured.)
They certainly do, the native wood pigeons here, Keruru, are renowned for getting drunk on berries. They gorge on them, they ferment in their gut and voila, one rolling drunk bird.

yep. the options by my reckoning were smooth wire electric, closely-spaced barbed wire (which i've never liked), or woven wire (expensive, takes more posts, hard to build, impossible to repair).

now, i apologize in advance, for another cow picture. fergus trying out the bovine life.
