There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Hi Jay,
That is my brother in the photo at Huntington Harbor. We fish for Halibut, Spotted Bay Bass, and other species using salt water flies. On this day the only thing we caught (and released) was a Mullet about 10” long. There is a school of these fish that sometimes is seen in the Harbor. We also Flyfish the surf, mostly for Corbina.
Cheers,
Ralphie
I’ll see your Great Blue Heron, and raise you one Snowy Egret.

Young weta. Did the paper here boy scoot to outside . Perhaps 2 inches long on the body, feelers spread more like 6.
Edit, after researching this beast it turns out to be an Australian winged Weta. Evidently they made it here in the 1990s, usually seen around Auckland and Coromandel. Never heard about it before.

WOW!
There is a side story to me grabbing that pic and posting it. The pic is from an online news article about the number of tourists who stand in the middle of the road just over the brow of the hill to take the pic, and the risks to their safety.

Christmas in North Falmouth, MA. The beetle will come out of the water after New Years.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.

Did you recognize the water in the second pic? AKA “broken-paddle-dog-swims” rapid.
I wanted to boat over to some riverside property that I have down there. Contemplating putting it on the market. I was going to place markers so the parcel boundaries would be visible. The river was icier than I was comfortable dealing with on my own and I decided not to cross over. I.e. chickened out. There were a couple stretches where taking the wrong channel could have been sketchy. If I’d brought a drysuit and had a couple more hours of daylight I might have gone for it.
The put-in looked doable …

Where I’d planned to take out was pretty iced in.

Cool whirlpool ice formation in the eddy across the river.

I found a better place to take out a little upstream, but by then I’d decided to bag it for the day. Really, it was just an excuse to go out on a ramble. Not that an excuse is needed. Wonderfully quiet and clear day. Only saw one couple steelhead fishing from shore with a fire going. Looked like a nice way to spend the day. Lots of critters about.
Beware the pogonip!

Because they're related the biologists here call them a Weta, I had one of ours on my neck yesterday, it's hard to not have feral reaction and scream like a little child , but I managed as I brushed the 3 inch cockroach coloured cricket off. Might have said something pejorative to it tho.
Meanwhile, on wandering back to the house I noticed one of Santa's helpers checking out a landing site and general egress.

Reminds me of my buddy from Colorado. He went “home” one year for Winter Break, and when he came back he told me I’d really missed out on a great trip.
”It never got above 0° once!”
And, yeah, he meant 0°F.
Which, to me, sounds like the opposite of great. Of course, if I had snow clothes, it might be different. I’m certainly not equipped for that, now, though.![]()

You live in another world Garret. Always hard for me to conceive of it.
Ha, yep, like in the snow.
