Source of scrapped J/24 components

I’m slowly designing a daysailer and thinking it’d save some work and money if I could use components from boats being scrapped. Specifically, a J/24 keel and a J/22 rig are about what I’m thinking.
A fair number of these boats are dying of balsa core cancer. Is anyone systematically scrapping them?

Keep an eye on Craigslist in Mass and surrounding states, lots of boats show up for little or no money during the winter, you might get lucky.

Yes. The guy who runs it is responsive to specific requests. If you tell him how you'd want a J-24 keel to be cut from a used hull he'd do it for you. Then to get it to Mass'ts by a U-Haul trailer, which he could load it onto. I could haul that down for you on some trip south. Maybe you could advertise on Craigslist for what you want and get one closer.

I looked at Waterline's website. They are in N Kingstown RI. They specialize in small J's. They only show new stuff on their website,and it seems to be very expensive...cam cleats that you can get from Alibaba for $3.50 for $30 (same picture).

It might be worth a call however.

Have you called Mass Marine Parts in Quincy? A friend just picked up a Pierson 30 rudder there after a little docking mishap in NC.

It’s easier than that. I called my guy at a local boatyard and asked him if a J/24 had gone off to die in a corner of the yard. He laughed. A couple of phone calls later I was the proud owner. I paid the yard to dissect the keel and dump the rest.
We launch in the spring.

See our hosts’ drawings of Joel White’s Fox Island Class. My boat is loosely based on it.
I liked the overall concept of the handsome double ended daysailer, but wanted:
- Smooth topsides and a different construction method.
- A slightly larger rig.
- Use recycled keel and rig. J/24 it turned out.

There’s a very cooperative foundry that make such foolishness possible.
