If you don’t know a knot, tie a lot.
"If you don't know a knot, tie a lot" leads to what a now departed WWII navy vet friend of mine called "hatchet knots". The only way to untie them was with a hatchet.
Once you get a handle on knots, and can tie a dozen or so, plus variations, you start to improvise. When you are confronted by a situation, you explore in your mind how you would deploy rope to tackle it, and you come up with new ways to configure and load it.
It's not like memorizing a book of knots. It's more like grabbing a tool and using it in weird new ways.
Like welding something on to a wrench. That's what you do with rope -- only unplugged.
