A painting depicting the Mexican Revolution hero Emiliano Zapata nude and in an effeminate pose sparked a massive brawl outside a Mexico City gallery on Tuesday.
Irate descendants of the revolutionary and about 100 members of the National Union of Agricultural Workers blocked the entrance to the Fine Arts Palace where the controversial art piece is on display and fought counter-protesters, who showed up to defend sexual diversity.
A video of Tuesday's demonstrations revealed several supporters of Zapata punching and kicking a group of people, who opposed the family's request to have the painting removed.
The mustachioed Zapata is famous for leading farmers to land rights in the 1910-17 revolution. His grandson said Monday the painting should be removed or descendants would sue.'We are not going to allow this,' said Jorge Zapata Gonzalez. 'For us as relatives, this denigrates the figure of our general (Zapata), depicting him as gay.'
The painting was created in 2014 by Mexican artist Fabián Cháirez. It is currently part of an exhibition, 'Emiliano Zapata after Zapata,' that features 141 renderings from different artists to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Zapata's death.

Cháirez piece, which was first introduced in 2015, depicts a nude Zapata wearing high heels and a pink, broad-brimmed hat, straddling a horse.
The artist told local media the painting is not labelled as a portrait of Zapata, who is normally represented in a more macho pose, with a rifle or pistol, and an ammunition belt.
'The violence makes us think that there are still many problems that have not been addressed, such as homophobia,' Cháirez said in a Tuesday night interview with El Heraldo TV.
'From my foxhole I will appeal to freedom of expression and defend the institutions that favor plural exposures.'
'This isn't freedom of expression, it is debauchery ... that is degrading. They can't exhibit our history that way,' said Antonio Medrano, spokesman for the protesters.
They demanded the government respect Mexican history's 'great icons.'
'They can't permit this kind of mockery,' Medrano said.
Luis Vargas, curator of the exhibit, noted that the controversy had brought in a lot of visitors. He said a painting is just an artistic representation and said he thinks it's positive that are reopens debates about continuing issues in Mexican society like homosexuality.

A counter-protest in support of Cháirez and gay rights has been scheduled for Friday afternoon at the museum's concourse level.

Hooo boy, that one's deliberately inflammatory, carefully designed to offend just about as many Mexicans as possible, sort of like Serrano's 'Piss Christ' . Reminds me of an old joke - 'Hey, look at that schmuck on the horse!'

Yeah, it was, but not the one in the painting.

There is a persistent understory that Zapata was bisexual but kept it hidden. Publicly he was macho and persecuted homosexuals. See https://culturacolectiva.com/history...ta-sexual-myth and note that the author claims the authority of family lore.
