    Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

    Relying on the buoyancy of the main boom, since they can't ease it out

    Looks like the topsail is a bit slack, so they might have just started to strike that sail. Of course, at this point, everyone is just hangng on for dear life until they come out of that gust.

    I was 'casual' crew on a 1911 English built gaff cutter in 35kts once. Double reefed main and the deck was still at 45 degrees.
    No modern winches, 30 on board as rail meat. Wet, exciting, scary, fantastic! I've never felt so much power in a boat.

    yup, pretty sure it went something like this, “oh look, there’s old fuddyduddy (alfred beken) with his camera, let’s give him a sailby. . .”

    Those are surely Dacron sails, so it’s perhaps not such an old picture.
