Gibraltar defies US, releasing Iranian oil tanker
The move came after a last-minute request from Washington that the UK territory surrender the vessel
    ByALISON TAHMIZIAN MEUSE, BEIRUT
Authorities in Gibraltar on Thursday said they would release an Iranian-flagged oil tanker, defying a last-minute request by the United States to surrender the vessel to its custody.

“Authorities in Gibraltar have released the Iranian supertanker Grace 1, which was seized on July 4 on suspicion it was shipping 2.1m barrels of crude oil to Syria in breach of EU sanctions,” the Gibraltar Chronicle tweeted.

The paper earlier reported that the territory’s Supreme Court had received a request from the US Department of Justice for “mutual legal assistance in a bid to seize the ship.”

Gibraltar, and by implicit extension the UK, has sent a message to Washington: “Leave us out of your problem with Iran,” said Noam Raydan, a geopolitical analyst at tanker tracker ClipperData.

Burned by the US washing its hands after its own tanker was detained, the UK has taken note.

Releasing Grace I, said Raydan, demonstrates that US allies are less and less willing to do Washington’s work.

Maybe Andrew could explain this, nearly every article calls it “Iranian oil tanker” and the owner is titled Russian Titan Shipping Lines. Never mind.

Lloyd’s List understands that the owner of the very large crude carrier is Russian Titan Shipping, a subsidiary of Dubai-based oil and energy shipping company TNC Gulf, which has clear Iranian links.

While Grace 1 has a complex ownership chain, this is not unusual for many internationally trading vessels. Its executives listed on LinkedIn have Iranian university and technical qualifications, or list their names in Farsi, the Iranian language.

It's a tanker with Iranian oil anyway.

Safe to say the US isn’t intercepting any tankers bound for China.

Ok, US issues warrant, UK and Gibraltar ignoring it. What next?

The US justice department has issued a warrant to seize a detained Iranian oil tanker, a day after a judge in Gibraltar ordered it to be released.
The Grace 1 supertanker, which is carrying 2.1m barrels of oil, was detained on 4 July on suspicion of illegally transporting oil to Syria.
A last-minute legal attempt by the US to keep the tanker detained was rejected by Gibraltar on Thursday.

The National Iranian Tanker Company is well regarded. Until Mr Trump came to power, NITC even employed British armed anti piracy guards. Today, however, steaming around with NITC on the side is like painting a target on the side.

    All clear now?

Thanks Andrew, I just read that ship workers who are working on ships exporting Iranian oil will be denied US visas. Is that significant?

The USA does not allow seamen working on ships that visit its ports to go ashore, Enron just to make a phone call, so it’s normal for seamen like my son to get US visas. If you don’t have one, you stay on board and - quite significant- you can’t join or leave a ship in the States.

From here, your current President is doing a fine job of making your nation look small and mean.

Oh, and I don’t think we are going to be stopping any more ships for you.

You're better off this way, we're getting the dirty end of the stick from China for doing the dirty work for Il Douche.

So where does this go? Will we simply go for small and mean with warrants ignored or amp it up to seizing Iranian ships?

The chance of an Iranian ship calling at a port in the USA is vanishingly small.

Seizing a ship belonging to a nation that you are not at war with, on the high seas or in the waters of another state, is called piracy.

That depends on how familiar your naval commanders are with maritime law. Officers and their men are obliged to refuse an illegal order.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

My experience of the USN (mainly from lecturing to USN Officers twice a year) is very familiar.

Good, please don't. Nobody wants to get involved in The Donald's temper tantrums.

Writs of mark up and reprehension are what he’s issuing.

So Andrew where is this going? Do we continue with blustering rhetoric declaring economic war on Iran escalating to piracy or do we wander off like a babbling drunk. I don’t see a coherent policy from Los Estados Unidos.

I don’t have a lot of time for Iran and Iranians, but I will admit to a grudging respect for NITC.

I think it means our allies are saying “we’ve had enough of your bs” so the warrant is meaningless or the Navy is tasked with starting an embargo on Iran. Maybe China should send escorts to protect their purchases of oil.
