Added something to the stable, eh? Where are you keeping one that size? <G>

I love how cheap the ferries are up here. It makes spending the day out in the islands on a whim fun.

I don't get that sort of catwalk in front of the bridge. Why guard rails on either side of the central window but not elsewhere? What purpose anyway? What's with that projecting pole?

I'm guessing that might be a 'steering pole', often used on vessels which have the pilothouse located right in the bow like many Great Lake ships.

Residual bowsprit. Evolution hadn't quite got rid of it yet... like an appendix, or wisdom teeth.

How else are you going to be able to wash all those windows ?

The pole is indeed a sighting guide for manoeuvering into the slip, and the missing section of catwalk is to give the pilot a clear view of the bow while entering the slip.

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Ding! Got a ball on the end. Skipper uses it to position the ferry coming into the terminal.

The Miller Ferry is a nice trip out to Put-In-Bay and the islands on Lake Erie.
I've made the trip many times.

Paul and I took The Jet Express last Fall and that was a great experience too.

Sighting pole and window washing. Got it. Interesting assumption that they need a guard rail at the end but not all along.

The ferries in today's Washington system are much larger than the little ones we rode growing up. Here one of the ones that crossed the Columbia - Astoria to Megler - and which I rode a ton growing up. 20 car capacity --

Ian, I would guess that the guard rails at the end are so that the window-washer can lean over to wash the centre window. The washerperson would wear a safety harness and be clipped in to the handrail below the windows along the rest of the catwalk.

Amazing what this place teaches you. I have ridden the ferries my whole life and I always assumed the pole was a flagpole. Now I find it's the nautical equivalent of a tennis ball on a string hanging from the garage ceiling.

Ayup. It's little tricks like those that allow the pilot to berth the ferry so gently that you hardly feel that a 10,000-ton ship just bumped to a stop.
