    Default Fanny of Cowes

The plain little boat with the rather big rig in the picture is the legendary racing Itchen Ferry boat “Fanny of Cowes”, with her owner, the racing dinghy designer and builder Nigel Waller, in the cockpit.

Built in 1872 for a family of Cowes fishmongers - who happened to include King George V’s racing pilot... I asked her owner if she were the oldest racing boat still active and he said “No, there are some Colchester snacks built in the (Eighteen) Sixties still going...”

Her lines were copied for the larger “Dolly Varden” - Thomas White Ratsey’s “works boat”.
