Default Is there anything more useless to a boatbuilder than apparel?

I called my usual “go to” in the Annapolis area for hardware and rigging for my latest project. Instead of the usual knowledgeable staff, I got what seemed like a TJmaxx transplant. No more rigging, no more hardware. Apparel only. She told me that’s what their customers demanded.

I guess I know where to go for a yachting outfit. . .

Oh no! Not Annapolis Performance Sailing (APS)?
I lost Sierra Trading Post seven years ago when it was bought up by TJX Companies.

I went to the Maine Boats and Homes show today with my thee year old. As we were looking at the different boats he said something about 'old-fashioned' boats. I thought that was a pretty advanced word for one so young and asked what 'old-fashioned' meant to him. He thought for a bit and said "all parts are FASHION??"

So I guess it's 'all-fashion' boats. Actually a pretty good and depressingly accurate description of the plastic, be-cushioned yacht palaces on display.

Do they at least sell aprons? Shop aprons, that is...

Their customers demanded it, eh? I bet it had nothing to do with the comparative margins...

I have never heard of any customer demand that they stop selling stuff. That is on a par with an enquiry being countered with "no body ever asks for those".

Is there an industrial rigger near you. Usually as good a quality but without the Yellow Welly mark up.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
