    Default Used Sails?

We got caught in a horrendous gust front, near Manitoulin, which blew out the double reefed Main in seconds.

Not a huge surprise. It was 25 years old. But before I mortgage the house and order a new one, does anyone recommend a used sail store? One that is honest, and which will ship reliably?

There's been a few on kijiji in Ontario lately, you might get lucky, at least get a sorta fits hold you over sail if it needs to be made.

Looks like it tore on the seams? No chance of repair?

No fix. Old fabric gone soft, weak seams, weak stitching overall. Believe me, I’ve patched.

I need to invest in something better, although it doesn’t have to be new.

The duck punt needs a real sail. I have really grown to love this goofy boat.

    What are your dimensions?
Are you going to have a sailmaker recut a slightly larger sail? That is often a good economy and you can end up with a sail that works well.
We have a local sailmaker that does a brisk business in racing sails. Even the Wednesday night beer can racers are competitive and he has a dumpster full of darn good used sails. I can't believe how good some of them are.

Arghhh... no one has low-aspect-ratio used sails.

    I need a luff of 27' 5", and a foot of 15' 7".

Everything I can find is pretty much the size of the old mizzen I already have.

I'm not surprised on that point. If you start with the foot and go to the shortest luff, is there something that isn't too pricey and can be cut down? And will the sail shape purists attack me for suggesting such a thing?

I have cut down lots of sails. (had a sailmaker do it for me)
It always worked better than no sails and the cost was acceptable or even cheap as sail cloth is expensive. Reef points are extra!
Usually it was just cutting a new sail from the middle of another. Still a good economy. I was always experimenting with sail area, and gaff, jib-headed, or lug etc. or a specific boat.
I'll ask... 15'-7" on the foot. You will eventually need the diagonal (leech) if you recut it.

I searched and plotted and suffered and even read the sailmaker's apprentice. In the end I came up with the fortune a little at a time and had new sails made.

    Man are they nice.....

    Dave,
Call Andy in Kingston, he has a small loft on the go - he just finished our sails. They look amazing, can't wait to get out sailing next year.

Try Shoreline sailboats in Upstate NY. They do a lot of racing and are tied in to a lot of other racers and sailmakers, maybe they have something. http://shorelinesailboats.com/

    Good Luck!

If you aren't able to find someone local, the vast majority of sails these days come out of Asia. I know, I know, but if you buy a brand new boat off the lot, the sails came out of the same giant lofts that you can order from on the internet.

You measure carefully and fill out the order form with the information, they build you a sail and ship it. Its fairly cheap. If you order a sail at one of the major lofts on our shores, there is a very good chance that the sail is still made overseas. The local guy is just in charge of measurements and fitting.

I did this a few times, getting a second hand low aspect mainsail is hard, was impossible for me. I ended up buying the sail with the foot measurement I wanted and having the head cut off. But now I suspect the labour cost would make that uneconomic with batten pockets etc...or close.
The last recut I had done was a carbon #4 jib off a race boat.free.... leech cut out to remove battens and slides on. It cost a boat buck compared to a new sail at say 4.

Most times I'd say used sails are not worth it. There's likely a reason the previous owner got rid of them. You'll spend good money recutting them to fit. And they will still be old. And having spent more than you planned as a short term fix, you'll be stuck with them. Buy new from Asia.

Another good point about junk rig, if you blow out a panel it doesn’t destroy the whole sail...that and the fact the sails are cheaper to make.

We are so lucky being so close to Andy's loft and have a traditional rig. There are also a couple great coffee shops close by for technical discussions. He has been an amazing resource for our build. Maybe you need a road trip ?

For an occasional-use sail, a drifter or a storm jib or a spinnaker, buying used is a great idea. For the mainsail? No you want that one to be RIGHT.

This is over 15 years ago now, but I can still remember how happy I was with the new mainsail on Figment. The best bang for any buck I spent on that boat.
