We’re on Drake, at the marina at Spanish, at the conclusion of our North Channel cruise.

It’s weird to not have the anchor down.

Only thing I would say is particularly wrong is that PWCs are known to seep through their drive penetrations as a matter of course, so are not ideal candidates to be kept in the water for days at a time.

I once towed in a 1000 hp cigarette boat with my 5 hp kicker.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

How many knots did you make? someone giving away one of those, no motor, and I could maybe afford a 5HP to go on it LOL

I towed disabled powerboats on several occasions under sail with my old Pennant sloop. I loved it.

This photo was taken in the Carquinez Straits, just west of the bridge. This tow line is not visible in this grainy photograph, but I had pulled this powerboat off the bridge pilings, against a flood tide.

The bridge is shown in this second photo. I am handing the tow off to a friend, who had an auxiliary - this was before I hung a Seagull off my transom. The nice Easterly blowing that day was strong enough to tow that burden at about 2 knots against the flood tide. However, I couldn't hold the broad reach needed to reach the boat's destination on the south shore of the river.

No towing balls displayed, but apparently that's only for power vessels. So if you're towing under sail, no worries.

A powerboat once tried to follow my rowboat across the shallow area in the middle of Suisun Bay. He did not make it. I felt bad and had him lay his anchor across my rear deck, then rowed out to the deep and dropped it so he could kedge off.

I once pulled the same sailor off the same sandbar two evenings in a row.

On the third evening I just kept going.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Dave: I’ll take a shot at this.

    Brian:

My understanding is that she is not under the sailing vessel dispensation if she us using internally-propelling machinery with sails up (Inland Rule 2, (b),General Definitions).

My guess is she is not solely under sail in that narrow channel, with what looks like a fair current. And is that exhaust coming from her transom, starboard side?

However, even if solely under sail, I could see a seamanship problem raised, that is, neglecting precautions that would be the ordinary practice of seamen. (Inland Rule 2 (a) Responsibility).

Also, I do not believe that the towing diamond is needed if the tow is less than 200 meters astern (Inland Rule 24 (a), (v) Lights and Shapes).
