I am not an Anglophile. I just run a 47 Coventry made Ferguson TO 20 , an 88 Jaguar Xj6, am trying to fix up a 64 TR4, I watch almost all British detective shows and gangster films, and an occasional Spy flick. I still listen to everything Marianne Faithfull ever sang, every day....I can't wait till Britain is free again

Oh look - a five cent swing HUGE NEWS....

As a small child we had two dollars sixty eight to the pound -
As a teenager - two dollars forty
At uni as a student - dollar fifty
Working in a different university -two dollars forty five
In banking in the late eighties - dollar five
When I found WBF - two dollars.

The average across my working lifetime has been about the dollar fifty mark

I expect to see a number well below parity within two years.

I have a friend who has a collection of old British motor bikes. He gets just about all his genuine, original parts from India. Cheap parts, cheap postage and apparently still a sizeable stockpile. JayInOz

You've got it bad. I'm sure modern medicine has a cure. The Ferguson is OK, the Triumph can probably be redeemed, but that wet liner POS Jag engine will bring you to tears every 60,000 miles. Now, there is an NZ company that re-machines the liners out of something else to fix the Jag's woes once and for all (true, no bs). And allegedly Holden 186cu pistons drop straight in, at a fraction of the price of the Jag parts, but that is pure hearsay .

More Pounds Sterling to the dollar.
Possibly two visas to the UK and then on to Europe, but that is me guessing.

P.S. an EBS in the Lakes?

    An enviable memory...

With my studentship in the UK between 1965 -1971, I the two dollar forty rate is familiar.

However, the two dollar seventy rate is stuck in memory....... pre or post-Suez ?......... I was around 10 years old and my father complained about devaluation from Suez ......

Yes, well, maybe... but back in '99 y'all made the Jaguar XJR. My youngest son just bought one that had one missing factory rim, a crunched spot on the grill, and dodgy paint. Relative low miles. He buys about 6 vehicles a year as huge bargains at the auction (as they come up) - then fixes 'em and flips 'em. I'm already dropping hints that in this case he might want to consider all the times when his dear ol' dad did not strangle him as a chile - though he so often and so richly deserved it. <G>

It's gorgeous. It's svelte. It's leather interior is sweet. It's fast. And nimble for such a load. And classy. That's the only real hesitation. Classy might damage my long-cultivated 'personal brand', eh?

I don't doubt we could sell you a few bits and pieces from Davey or Classic Marine if needed.

I have a Sestrel Major binnacle compass.

I handed it over to Barry Philips, who used to work for Sestrel and who now repairs them (he also made the Rigel compass) and he has just contacted me to ask if I will sell it to the RNLI, as they still specify them for their all weather lifeboats and SIRS, who took over manufacturing them after Sestrel closed, have also stopped.

I attach a photo of the last uniquely good British product to be exported:

Hmmm... I think one beer pundit called G.B. the 'elder statesman' of beer-making nations. That's kinda more like it, methinks. Germany could make an argument, or Belgium. But these days I really do think it's the U.S. Maybe China will take over at some point, but that's a ways in the future if so.

You just said that to start a rumble, dincha??? <G>

I'm rather surprised that no one jumped in to tell me I'm mad to covet a '99 XJR...

Are you talking beer . .

    . .or lager?

Trappist beers are good, if you like that sort of thing.

Lager IS beer. But I'd not limit my consideration to lagered beers - and that's not how the claim was phrased.
