    Default The fall

Well sh!t. I've been working with the crew around, wearing my safety gear, being careful. The crew took the cover off a hatch hole on the second floor room to move up some plywood. They didn't put it back. I fell 10.5 feet to solid concrete.

Broke my back in 6 places -compression fractures. And way smashed up my hand/wrist.

Last night was bad pain wise. Morphine not much help. Surgery today and got rebuild on wrist with plates and screws.

Good news is I can move my feet and legs normally. We are going to try a brace on the back for months. So no immediate surgery there.

Freeing pretty dumb. I should have nailed all the holes shut. Darnit.

Possible full recovery is about 6 months to a year away. Which is also good news.

    Overall freeing pretty fortunate.

Alas! If morphine's not helping, it must be very painful.

Hope it eases off and you start healing up. That sort of sudden injury is really a shock.

    Wow.

Pretty decent prognosis after all that, so you got THAT going for you.

Ouch. Yes could have been a lot worse, or a lot better. At a school working bee a few years ago one of the dads was on a roof. He stepped back onto a glassfibre roof panel and fell through. Landed flat on his back. His head made the most awful sound. But other than a couple of bruises he was absolutely fine. Hope you heal well and quickly.

    That's a bad deal.
I hope the pain lessens soon and it is good news there is no obvious nerve damage.

    Dude! Not good.

Can we send a bottle of hooch your way? Strictly medicinal of course.

Congrats on it being way less worse than it could have been.

Thanks everyone. Going to be a long recovery. Turns out I also broke my other hand as well. Coming to realization that I am not independently mobile. Can't stand, sit, walk, or even roll over in bed without help. Got a surgical block on my smashed wrist arm. Still numb. Once I get that arm back, maybe easier.

Reduced m my own break immediately after the fall. It was gruesome. Didn't know I had it in me.

I'm on a variety of opioids. Interesting to see what helps which pain. Morphine was disappointing. Fentanyl is amazing.

Heck Tom, that's a game changer. Hope you recover quickly but that sort of result takes a while. Let's hope the forum can provide a few distractions along the way.

I'm sorry to hear that Tom. I guess it could have been much worse, but that may be cold comfort now. Rest up and we're all hoping for a fast recovery.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I have been enjoying your build progress and had a few close calls when building my place in NH. Every time I knew what I should have done prior and didn't. It a hell of a reminder to listen to that little voice and take the time up front. It's something I tell all my crews at work now and hopefully they will take it to heart. If it doesn't feel right, fix it until it does, and the ready time can be adjusted accordingly.

Happy the outcome wasn't far worse and wishing you a speedy recovery. Hope you have a good support system nearby.
    Tom
