    Default A Perfect Cuba Libre

Had to run to the Apple Store for an issue they gave me a 1+ hour wait so I decided to go back to that Great Cuban Place thats in the same mall.

I had a wonderful Cuban Sandwich and feeling in that Cuban mood decided to wash it down with a rum & coke AKA a Cuba Libre

This is how they served it.

Glass with Limes, bucket of ice, bottle of Mexican sugarcane coke, hefty poor of Bacardi Gran Reserve

    A freaking proper cocktail.

Its a little bit more like having your own sugar plantation and adjusting the ice / soda / lime / rum ratio while sitting under the shade of a palm tree with your big straw hat listening to Carman Miranda on the wireless in 1938

that sounds like it almost makes up for having to go to an apple store in person

A friend who got here by way of the Mariel boatlift makes his very simply:

    1/3 freshly squeezed lime juice
    1/3 Coca Cola
1/3 best rum you can find

Makes me think of Chuck and the bottle of Solara Gran Reserve he sent up to Lefty's for Margo's WBS EBS.

one of the things i wonder:

    why don't cocktails use pepsi?

well, aside from the famous pepsi peppermint shnapps, of course.

    No ice no limes here.
Go to coconut palm, pull down coconut, hack end off with machete, pour over whatever rum is on the boat, drink.

Because the Andrews Sisters sang about rum and coke.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

More because Coke had a de facto sugar monopoly during WWII. And that nasty Georgia swamp doc would not share is formula.

It was definitely a heavy double and produced a solid 2.5 cocktails.

I would have called this thread something like Apple products suck and their customer service is appalling, get me a drink! Or something like that. I admire your positive outlook. Happy New Year.

Too bad that wasn't the case. I walked in a polite woman took my name and phone number, she said they would text me when my appointment was ready. I walked over to the Cuban restaurant, ordered a cuban sandwich and a Cuba Libre. 1/2 way through they text press 1 if you are on your way 2 if you want another 30 min. I hit 2 and finished enjoying my lunch Finished paid and sauntered back over to the Apple Store. Walked up to the same polite woman who logged me in, and asked me to sit at a nearby table. Geeky tech dude came by said whats the problem? I said my left AirPod isn't working. He said oh I'm sorry, and checked it, yup it's not working. Went to the back came out 10 seconds later with a whole new AirPods set open the package, paired it for me. I made sure it worked, thanked him and left. Total time in the Apple Store probity 18 minutes. Total time in Cuban Restraunt 1 hour -15 min.

I like to embellish the headache to make the drink sound more worthwhile

    Happy New Year

Interesting your comment about Mexican sugar cane coke. I worked on a sugar cane plantation in Papua New Guinea for a couple of years, and noticed the coke tasted different in PNG. Coke is one of those things you'd think would be identical the world over. While I was there we lost the contract to supply sugar for coke, in favour of cheaper imported stuff. Turns out the imported stuff is more highly refined, pure white sugar. Coke lost its slightly brown sugar flavour.

there was a corn syrup plant around here that made syrup for Coke. they shuttered the plant in favor of a closer plant up north, owned by the same company no less. a few months later they had to reopen the plant here b/c the flavor of the corn syrup was different and made the Coke taste different. same corn at both plants. they eventually copied the process at the plant here and replicated it up north and shut ours down again.

A tray is brought to you with an 8-ounce Coke, a small bucket of ice, a 2 + plus -ounce shot of Bacardi Superior and an empty tumbler so you can make your Cuba Libre to your liking.

Since it made about 2.5 delicious drinks for $12 thats about $4.80 per drink , pretty good deal for an upscale place like this - I like bar math

this reminds me. one time we were making fun of the mcdonalds "big breakfast" or something like that. we essentially decided that you were paying them $1 more to disassemble a sausage and egg biscuit.

And I’m having a little trouble associating the “perfect” anything with a mall. Wouldn’t there need to be a boat associated with the perfect Cuba Libre? Or at least a beach?

I know I would feel the same way Steven, but heres the thing EVERYTHING thats cool, new, funky, hot & fun is in a strip mall or in this case a hi end open mall. The Irvine Spectrum is a seriously cool open mall sort of like a little downtown city off the 5. All of my boutique cool restaurants are all in strip malls. I know it weirds me out too.

This place Habana is full on Disneyesque immersion experience, you walk in and the place is like walking into the Hotel Havana circa 1950. It's one of those SoCal experience things.

So I had to go to the Apple Store again yesterday. My corporate lease for my laptop was up and I got to pick up my brand new 15" MacBook Pro So of course I timed it around end of the day to enjoy a nice refreshing Cuba Libre at Habana's

I will say I was wrong about the price and there is no happy hour pricing there so this is the everyday price.

As for the MacBook OMG wicked fast, with this cool little oled control bar.
