I'm a great example of how you ain't gotta be all that smart to be in Mensa. I dunno my IQ, but they also accept SAT scores > 1400 - which qualifies me. However, I got a 760 on the math portion while I was flunking algebra - so it seems I just test good.

    Yes, I eventually passed it.

It is very difficult to judge such an issue. There is big difference between smart and well educated or well read etc. Many people are very good at what they do. Some express themselves better than others on the forum. Some people appear to have amazing insight and I suggest that is a good indicator of intelligence. They just seem to understand things better than most people do. Some may not be nearly as intelligent as others but do not betray that fact because they do not comment on things that they do not know.

I am smart, but far from the smartest. I think Bob, oh that bob, is one of the smartest that I have seen post here.

It seems to me the posters here can be roughly sorted into 3 groups. The groups have nothing to do with political ideology. First, there are people who seem fairly bright and articulate. They may express opinions that are different from mine but they are reasoned and logically presented without name calling, etc. Nearly everyone here fits into this group at least some of the time. There are a few bright people who think they are a lot smarter than they are. They are totally obnoxious and their posts aren't worth reading. Last but not least, there are a few total dumbasses. Nothing but cheerleaders for the red team or the blue team with no real understanding of the issues they post about. It would probably be in poor taste to provide examples but I imagine we all know who they are.

Oh. Didn’t mean it that way. It was a reference to an old line from a cartoon. But when I read it without that reference, I see how it would not be good. Sorry, I meant it as a compliment.

I saw the first part as a boo boo and the second as a yogi reference.

I certainly watched Yogi when I was growing up in Liverpool, and I'm quite sure they had TV in Wales at the time too

@ the OP: There's a long road from being really smart to having a clue and I'm not sure many really smart folks can make the trip. Years ago I went to a Mensa meeting. Holy nerdiness Batman! Those who weren't impressed with their own brilliance were largely incapable of carrying on on a conversation. I beat a hasty retreat & went to a bar. Far better!
What's your view on Vanna's vowel movement?

As for Mensa, I have met some incredibly stupid/intentionally-ignorant geniuses. I have a few long-term friends who are very well educated, aware and (with the exception of a tendency to pun) capable conversationalists. They're not all drooling dingbats -- but I have read somewhere that there's a gene/gene complex that is/are associated with both great intelligence and madness (mental weirdness). Myself? I'd need to plead autism. Weird.

One of the ways I know my brother is smarter than me is his puns are infinite. I can hold my own for half a dozen straight, but by then I get tapped out. Steve can freestyle puns for ten minutes solid. Spooky.

It was an accident! Luckily the concrete containment chamber seems to have set. We'll say no more about it.

Nah, I like to be able to do my puns in the dark. True story - I had a prof at the seminary who was deaf, but who lipread. We had an evening class ... and the power went out. She carried on just fine with the lecture, but folks who wanted to ask a question had to hold up a candle and illuminate their mouths ... Memorable. We'll build a pun-battle amphitheater in the compound ... with decent lighting and acoustics.

Coincidentally enough, I happen to have studied the Greeks and their theatres. We can wear little maskies, and have a whole chorus of hype men.
