    Default DC Motor Power Supply/Controller?

OK, so the tinkering bug has bit, and I've decided to build a sander/grinder.

Of course, I'd like to build a Jeremy Schmidt, but my metalworking mojo is simply not there.

    Yet.

I scored a treadmill offa Craigslist for the steel and the motor/drive.

It was free because it only runs for a few seconds before it displays an ErroR and shuts down.

I have no electronics skills whatsoever, so I have stripped off the circuit boards.

The way I see it, I should be able to get an adapter and a motor controller for dirt cheap if only I knew what I was looking for!

The motor is 1.5 HP, 120VDC, and I need to run it off 120VAC. Variable speed is pretty much mandatory, IMO.

I spent an hour on Google, Amazon and Ebay last night, and what I came up with ranged between $2k and $4K.

A little rich for my blood.

Do I need to wait for another treadmill that works right?

What sort of gizmo should I be looking for? I have found that one can find just about anything on Google if only one knows what search terms to use.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

grainger has a good searchable database with multiple filters for input/output volts and amps, etc. . .
you may find it useful to narrow your search

    You mean the Jeremy Schmidt 2 x 72 sander/grinder?

    Yes.

    A thing of beauty.

That kid keeps making attachments for it, too.

AND, it's not like they're 'attachments', you know?

He can go from a vertical platen to a horizontal in about 2 seconds. From the platen to a contact wheel or to any other configuration in about 10 seconds.

VERY carefully made, EVERY part adjustable . . . If I were rich, I'd buy one to stand in the corner of the living room.

With all the 2" bar stock he's got in that thing, with the stand and all, I'll bet it goes over 300 pounds.

What was the power source for the original device at 120V DC?
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

    Uhhhh . . .

I plugged it into 120VAC, the circuit board did its electromagical dance, and the dang thing started turnin'!

I should unblock the ads, just to see what's what!

I grabbed another treadmill offa Craigslist, BTW, this one wants 135VDC and makes 2.5 hp. Its controller is working just fine.

One unexpected bonus from this little adventure is the little gear motors that elevate/lower the incline.

They are 120VAC, and make 400 pounds of thrust. Complete with jack screw.

Another bonus is the treadmill belts. They are going to make EXCELLENT drawer liners!

If someone tells you or someone you love to 'find what you love and make a living at it', please give them a solid, right hook to the head for me, yes?

The thought of making just about anything out of wood makes me physically ill, anymore.
