    Default Boatbuilding in/near New York...?

    Hi everyone,

Iíve tried looking through the existing archives but havenít seen anything similar to my situation.

I currently work as a furniture maker in the UK, but I started my apprenticeship almost 7 years ago in the traditional boatyards of Cornwall. Iíve since moved inland and with my now wife (hence the departure from boatbuilding to joinery and cabinetry) weíre looking for a new adventure Ďacross the pondí. Katie (my wife) will be working in New York and I would really like to find a job not too far away within the boatbuilding industry or using my woodworking skills to some marine usefulness.

From my research of visaís, Iím going to need to convince a potential employer to sponsor my visa petition so really Iím just looking to find out if anyone knows where to start - maybe some companies to approach or if not, am I barking up the wrong tree?!

    Thanks all!
    Michael

While not too close to NYC itself, out on Long Island in Greenport, NY is Wooden Boatworks. http://www.woodenboatworks.com/

Shelter Island NY too, though far from NYC. Seymour's in Northport still does wood boat work.
There may be operations still in northern New Jersey.
Good luck and keep us posted.

By 'New York', so you mean New York City or the entire state of New York?
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Yah lure him upstate and put him to work in the Adirondack guideboat mines.

I was thinking of either Tumblehome boatbuilding in Warrensburg, N.Y. or Hall's Boatshop in Lake George, N.Y. Both build, restore and care for classic wooden boats.
