That story is older than you probably think - it's from the Odyssey. Most of Odysseus's troubles were because the sea god Poseidon was mad at him for putting out the eye of the sea god's son, Polyphemus. To placate Poseidon, Odysseus was told to walk inland carrying an oar until he gets to a place where people know nothing of the sea. When a passerby asks him, "What are you doing with that winnowing fan on your shoulder?", he must plant the oar in the ground and offer sacrifices to Poseidon.
Speaking of Polyphemus, did you know that he once tried to work as a teacher? He had to quit because he only had one pupil.
I will beg you for advice, your reply will be concise, and I will listen very nicely and then go out and do exactly what I want! (Apologies to Lerner and Lowe.)
