see this yet? really big wolf head, fur and soft tissues intact, found in melting siberian permafrost.

the hype is that the head is "16 inches long", but i don't believe it.

might be 30cm from tip of snout to back of cranium, looking at the tape. Bigger than a modern wolf, certainly.

the greater marvel is the preservation, and the almost alive connection to the distant past (by human standards). every time something like this comes out of the permafrost i am interested.

"Perfectly preserved". There must be enough DNA to clone one pretty easily.

34 minus 5 all divided by 2.54 - 11 1/2 inches, at the most, so 1/2 inch longer than the current high average. A big specimen, but there are probably a few around now that are bigger.

    Sensationalism.

I think it would be prudent to do the Jurassic park think with wolves before trying it with dinosaurs

A guy i know has a wolf hybrid. I asked him what kind of dog it was mixed with. It looks like a wolf.

He said "Well, as far as his insurance company was concerned it was purebred German shepherd. ".

He seems like a nice wolf as wolves go. He has been swimming with us down at the river.

30 years ago I was subletting a room in a farm house in suffield Connecticut. The lease holder had a wolf. You haven’t lived until you experience getting in at 2am, hearing the nails ticking on the hard wood floor. I would stand still, wait for toughy to come around the corner. He’d look at me for a moment then to back to the front bedroom. Those eyes looked like they were lit from the inside.

Then, and only then it was ok to go upstairs.

The only other rule was don’t pet him while he was eating.

and now you have a poodle hybrid

you might be interested to know that of all pure bred dogs, poodles are the closest genetically to wolves

Who is going to pay big money just to see a big wolf? An actual Jurassic park? I would schedule a whole vacation around that in a heart beat. As to the disaster that occurs in the movies, it reminds me of watching The Walking Dead, people really do some really, really dumb things which lead to the problems.

I had a similar experience someplace on the PCT called Hikers Haven. The guys had a wolf. Giant. He met me at the gate to the acreage. He growled and stood there for a few minutes looking at me. I looked away and bowed my head. He slowly moved away. He only rolled over for the owner. Otherwise he kept at a distance and watched.

The one exception, he was pals with anyone who showed up on the helicopter.

Probably the best remark in any post I've read this year, and the ultimate truism for humanities failures, which are manifest.

"people really do some really, really dumb things which lead to the problems".

Like electing crooks and incompetents, and I include Australia in that remark.
