I used to know a guy who bought one of those new, who drove it for years, then retired to South Carolina, still driving it on occasion. One day some years ago,(I think in the mid-1980s) he sends a note to his son: "I was in an accident, hit by a pickup. Some guy offered me $40,000 for it as is. Boy did I jump on that." Seemed like a great deal, since he had paid $8,500 when it was new.

    And then the site crashed.

Some people just use unusual numbers. When bidding on a MB450SL a few of the bids ended in 450, it is kind of a BAT culture thing..

My Dad who was a captain on Texaco supertankers left his 1956 in the garage of the house he sold in Ponte Vedra on the beach because the battery died as we moved to Panama. My parents’ 4 bedroom 3 bath house on the beach in 1965 sold for 8500 which had the pristine car with 6000 mile except for the battery in the two car garage. He was too rushed to take the new job assignment to go get the car.

Ayup. Folks leave the darndest things behind sometimes. When I live in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, there was a Riva Aquarama hauled up on the beach on Bequia and left to rot under the tropical sun. I got a message to the owner in Germany indicating my interest in the boat, but he replied with a message that he planned to come back for it - some day. Five years later a friend told me that it was still there, stripped, and the local kids were using it as a playground.

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
