    Default Schooner Adventuress

She’s back at Shilshole as she is every summer. But this year she is missing her topmasts. I’ve never seen her carry tops’ls, I’ve heard that the Coast Guard wouldn’t allow it as a charter vessel. But at least her topmasts gave her some grace. She’s looking a bit stubby now. Hope it’s just temporary, maybe they are undergoing some repair.

I was chasing a schooner in front of Shilshole yesterday, but the winds got so light I never made it close enough to identify the hull. I think it was Adventuress. She could have used the topsails for sure, she was drifting even slower than I was.

Wow. That’s a rare pic. Never seen her set the tops.

Today she is out and her main topmast is run up but she’s still missing her fore top and jibboom. I forgot that a vessel like this can run out her own spars. Probably just lowered them to the deck for a fresh coat.

Zodiac runs with only a Main topm’st. Surprised that Adventuress is without hers. Neither are allowed to set tops’ls with passengers on board, but they make great publicity shots.

Adventuress shows sail number 15, while Zodiac is 8.

So what's the reasoning behind no tops'ls?

I think its because in general USCG is very conservative about passenger vessel knockdown possibilities. I forget the particulars but the result is that the sailing charter vessels here in the breezy trades (Hawaii) end up with noticably short rigs.

Exactly. USCG has this tendency to worry about passenger safety.

If I recall correctly from my days on Spirit of Massachusetts, we could use topsails when sailing with trainees onboard, but not with daysail passangers.
