Take some of the best German engineering available, regress 70 years, take away all handling an then sell it in the only country that would put style above engineering excellence.

Meh. Not bad if you like that kind of thing (I don't) . I suspect that BMW managed to make it handle reasonably well (although not as well as a standard Beemer). It's metal sculpture you can ride around on, not engineering.

Style above substance? One thing I learned well in 20 years in advertising is that you can never underestimate the intelligence/taste/whatever of thee public. Same applies to politics. here, there, and looking at the world today most everywhere.

A bunch of wooden boat enthusiasts complaining about valuing style over practicality is a bit too ironic.

Does that say R18? Please tell me that it is not 1800cc. I had an R90, that had plenty of grunt.

They want to sell it as a well engineered form of transport, not a metal slupture. They fail badly on both counts

I don't know. I think it has potential.

Ditch the hard tail for a pair of plunger shocks and fix the headstock angle and I'd ride it. But yes, the current faux-Harley bobber look is a loser.

Is this real or a concept?

    edit: concept. Might sell.

Of course this is a concept bike.
Just wait to mid 2020 to see what they will sell starting from this 1800 cc engine
    No disapointment in sight.

Oh... and as for whether BMW ever had a soul:

I love air heads. Not so much everything since then.

EDIT: Except my old K-75S. That was a great bike.

My Guzzi Le Mans had race-kit Dell’Orto carbs with open trumpets and no starting circuit - just tickle buttons. For the rest of my life I will associate riding with that first few seconds of gasoline smell released by pressing the button to flood the carbs. I haven't had the bike in years but I still have my old riding gloves, now permanently infused with the scent of Italian machinery.

A large nose is the mark of a witty, courteous, affable, generous and liberal man. My feature suggests an excellent side kick of good index.

Truthfully - this 1983 BMW r100CS has more soul than almost any other bike I have ever ridden. I can not wait to return riding her in Europe in August. Sigh....
She is better than my R69s, R75/5, r90s or the new, fine 2018 bike 1200 urban gs I have sitting in my Alameda Garage.

If you want a boxer twin that looks old school and is a hoot to ride, take my old Ural solo:

Its not a hard tail, thats mentioned in the video, plus if you look hard you can see the big shock and spring unit under the seat.

Not my style, but Harley need to be aware. The Japanese vee twin cruisers stole some of their market, Indian took a big bite out of their butts, and if a company like BMW is taking aim at them, they should be working hard to produce something that will help keep their customer base.
Me? I'd like that engine in the front of a Morgan trike.

No idea what you guys are snivelling about, it's a Vincent. Or a Yamaha monoshock .... nothing wrong with either one.

Chris, you don't want plungers. They are the worst. Even a rigid handles better.

They might be going for a particular static look but the peg position is a compromise that seats the rider in a peculiar way. Obviously they can't go very feet forward with those heads, but that knees up business with the low seat...er, yeah nah.
