    Default Plexi or glass?

Anyone have an opinion about glass vs. plexiglass hatches and portlights? I guess plexi hatches are safer? And the ease of cleaning glass is more important for the portlights?

Plexiglass will degrade in UV. You should use polycarbonate or petg.

Never plexi. Use policarbonate - lexan - instead.

I’m a glass fan. Easy enough to make thick safety glass safe. Easier to clean, looks much better.

Acrylic - UV resistant, brittle, scratchable, DIY shapeable
Polycarbonate - must be treated/coated for UV resistance, tough, scratchable, DIY shapeable
Glass - UV resistant, not so easily scratched, toughened glass not so impact-resistant, laminated glass impact-resistant, probably must be professionally shaped.
Total cost depends where you are, who does the cutting.
    Take your pick.
(I just had several small portholes made - water-jet cut laminated glass.) Very happy.

Thanks all! Looks like I'll be going with glass. I'm buying the windows ready-made and they only offer plexi or glass. Glass it be!

Polycarbonate (lexan) is strong for the weight and is easily cut and drilled. The original install will tend to be easier.
It is easy to carry un cut spare material.
But it DO get scratched and foggy. If yer lookin for actual windows , like in a powerboat cabin, Glass makes more sense.
Small pieces in a hatch, portlites, covers for deck prism...polycarbonate is your friend.
I spray my wee polycarb windows with fresh water, rarely touch them with a cloth or brush and I re new them each 5 or 7 years.
