    Default dirt rat

I keep plugging this guys tunnels and he keep digging them back out. Finally got a good look at him. Fuzzy bigfoot picture with the phone.

He has little pinhole ears and beady eyes that couldn't spot me until I crept to 12'. Head about the size of a racketball. Buck teeth. No fleshy mole feelers around the nose. Didn't see the tail, but the body must be 8".

Not a mole. Not a ground squirrel. A dirt rat, sez I.

Not all moles have fleshy nose feelers. I would guess a broad-footed mole but I'm not a moleologist. Did you ask it's name and count it's teeth?

Blunt nose, beaver teeth. Like a gopher but with almost no ear flaps, and super small eyes?

Gophers usually have pretty good vision, no? This guy looked right at me from 20' and kept on digging.

Wouldn't that make it a brush mole?

Doing the same to a hog could be very messy & a waste of bacon.

Further enhancing the image I'm not so sure it's a rat...

Looks like a mudpuppy or maybe a hellbender. How far are you from water? They are a sight to behold.

Out of their range, obviously, but thought I would toss them in for their cool names.

    about three inches...

Seriously though, we have a creek and share an irrigation impoundment. Whole other bunch of rodentia down there.

No giant salamanders, but a plethora of newts and pollywogs.

More of a monowog, myself. But there's nothing newt under the sun.
