56 or 57 somewhere in there. A combination of bar, C, wood screw, welding and large pipe clamps. They all need wire brushing and oil since the demise of my shop this winter.

If I may ask a related question, I have one or two simple bar clamps like the one pictured below that don't work anymore. The segment that slides won't hold. I can't see anything wrong, but it does not hold. Can I fix this?

They require a strong spring to force the lock into the bar , find a hardware store that sells small springs and clean up the bar ridges.

You can grind off the little button that keeps the head from sliding off, slide the head off, flip the leaves of the clutch over, and reassemble.

Throw a few wraps of electrical tape around the end where the little button used to be, and you should be good to go.

You can then remove the tape and head in order to thread the bar of that clamp through weird work-pieces, too.

At one point I owned over 500 clamps of various sizes and descriptions.

    Too many.

I own over 200 at the moment, and some days I could use three times that number. Crazy.

Prolly 50 of various types. Some are encrusted with epoxy from not being careful enough.

I suppose 'not enough' is the predictable answer. I probably have about 100 store bought clamps, plus a whole lot of homemade lap clamps.

Somewhere around 100 I would guess, probably 75% of them are bar clamps that I buy at Harbor Freight because they are very cheap and actually work better than the ones that HD and Lowe's sells. And clamps are not worth spending much money on IMO.

I just get out a hammer and bang away at epoxy clumps that invariably accumulate.

A 12 inch bar clamp at Harbor freight is 4 bucks, toss it is what I do. Doesn't happen that often,

Paint stripper gun and a carbide scraper fixes that.

My broken clamps are more like 36 inch, but your point is well taken. Fixing it could be fun. When it stops being fun, I'll buy more.

when I was regluing the mast on my Gp14, I had just enough.. which of course means I had to buy more. I think I am close to 100 now of the spring clamp variety, no idea on the sliding bar type.. I think close to dozen. I like the new style that let you use them as "pushers" too

I have about a dozen of these, they are for hardwood only.

Never enough, but then I make clamps for special purposes out of thick ply. But I reckon I've built/repaired my last boat so probably more than enough.

    This.
Sometimes, using a crappy ax or hatchet,I will knock notches into the top and bottom of smooth clamp bars,so the dogs will grip it better.

Cleaning glue is best done with a really coarse rasp.
I was given several 'scrap' farrier's rasps, twenty-odd years ago and they still work really well for this sort of thing.

Too many? I didn't think that was possible.

My issue is that I teach others to build boats. I usually have at least 8 students at a time and between the clamps owned by the school where I teach and my own large personal supply, we routinely run out of clamps. I keep adding to the total every year, but continue to come up short, sadly.
