Default I really like this guys suggestions for home defense/Safety.

Many people have expressed a need to have a weapon for home defense.
At the end of this youtube video Paul Harrell gives some very good advice.

Watch the video starting at 19:14.

Many people have told me that: "many people have expressed a need to have a weapon for home defense so that they will be more likely shot by their own weapon."
At the end of this youtube video Paul Harrell gives some very good advice, just ignore the first part..

Hey gang, I bought a BB gun yesterday, my home, the barrel full of birdseed has been invaded by a pair of pesky red squirrels. Do you think if I shoot them two rascals in the butt, they might get the message to go elsewhere?

Are red squirrels in season where you live?

I don't think they have a season.Like crows or rats with furry tails. I don't want to kill them just a pellet in their butts to make them decide too go elsewhere.

Why not just get a metal container instead of torturing little animals? Do you think that crippling them makes them less likely to depend on easy food? Do you live in city limits? Might be illegal as well. Do you have neighbors? You also may need a hunting license even if they are not protected.

Seems silly to set up a banquet and then shoot the attendees.

Interesting. In all my 76 years I’ve never met such a one.
A society predicated on the assumption that everyone in it should want to get rich is not well situated to become either ethical or imaginative.

So what's the advice at the end? I'd rather not listen to the whole thing; can somebody tell me the punch line?

The can I use to put my seed in is not a banquet for them. If they remain at the feeders that is something again but, they have to rely on seeds that have dropped. Feeders are squirrel proof. The can is another thing and they chew holes in the top to get to it. As I said, I don't want to shoot them, I want to wake them up and realize a pellet on the ass hursts and they should go elsewhere.

Statistics would also tell him the likelihood of EVER needing that 'personal protection' weapon. And also the odds that said weapon would - without good and repeated training - serve the homeowner well in a live-action exercise.
OK, I listened to it. Eminently sensible. Prepare for what's more likely, not for something that's vanishingly unlikely. Unfortunately, we're hard-wired to worry about dramatically bad events, but have to study hard to learn statistics. We worry about 'home invasions', yet not about dying in a car crash on the way home from work, when the latter is VASTLY more probable. We worry about our children being kidnapped by strangers, when we're actually more likely to get struck by lighting.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4FESGjiH3s

The video is about his recommendations for Top Five Guns for Home Defense.
But at the end of the video he spends a few mins explaining to prepare for more likely and not the less likely things.
    1. Put Batteries in your smoke detector.
    2. Make sure your house hold chemical are out of reach from small children.
    3. Have a fire extinisher.
    4. For home defense get a dog.

I think this is very good advice and refreshing to have this advice in a gun video.
In my case I have followed this same advice and do not own a gun.
My attack dog is all I need to scare away anyone who may break into my home.

First, Yes, Harrell is the voice of reason. He speaks to reality and facts, I enjoy his videos. I have the 10 year battery smoke detectors and two dogs. For what it's worth, when someone asks me what I think the best home defense weapon is, I tell them a claw hammer. You won't kill your wife or neighbor with a stray claw hammer.
In the US this perverted idea of “blood and soil” over “constitutional principles” is the most radical and anti-democratic and anti-Conservative idea I have heard in my lifetime.

No - you want to shoot them.

That is probably a little abstract even for a squirrel.
They need to eat, and the food is there, simple.
It is unlikely they will equate the food to the pain from a remotely fired BB. Would you train your dog that way?

I have strong feelings about those that deliberately wound animals.

It's spring plenty of things to eat.

Excellent advice at the end. I agree with geng on the matter. Proper planning for a mass home invasion requires having a hand gun readily available in every room. And not locked up, so your children can get to them. A certain recipe for tragedy. A stupid delusion.

Make your house impossible to scope from the road, and easy to blockade thieves in, by planting trees.

In effect, make them choose someone else's house.

I have deliberately, and with forethought, never dressed-up the laneway entrance to my house. It's weedy, dirty, and a bit littered with road trash. I want a thief to suspect that a weird guy with guns and dogs lives in there. And down that overgrown lane lies potential trouble.

It isn't true. But it appears that way.

No trouble for 25 years so far, except for the JWs.

i used to have a stealth mud puddle at the end of my easement. Worked great. Then, an actual JW built behind me(shared easement) and he installed an 18 foot wide paved highway , inviting tourists, horseback riders, walkers , other JW’s . The irony.
