Looks to be coming in the Eastern Solent with the Forts behind. They'd have have come in with the tide moving at 3-4 knots, and as they're running, so it must be an Easterly with a high pressure over the UK. As such he's probably a bit terrified of losing steerage at the point, as the boat will be moving slow and the tide flow will be taking the wind out of his sails. Hence everything up. It's a fairly narrow channel down that way but at least he's not pressured by shipping that would otherwise now be present.

I really like the cut of her topsails.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Initially thought it was biradial, but I guess its just stretch in the vertical panels from the outhaul, and a brailing line. Mainsail outhaul needs slacking off a bit for downwind light air.

Elsewhere I have a picture of two 4 wheel horse drawn wagons with Waterwich's sails all piled up loosely on top. Going to be dried? Cleaned? Or just winter storage?

    Lets see it then?

I love the incidental background stuff...
