    Default Gotta Love Steam

Sometimes, all you want is torque.

Diesel: need two engines to make it up to the pass.

    [engine breakdown]

Steam locomotive: "Here, hold my beer and watch this."

A freight weighing in at 11,260 tons broke down 24 miles east of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

As it happened, Union Pacific 844 was behind it in the same line. UP 844 is an FEF-3 class 4-8-4, the last steam engine delivered to Union Pacific, back in 1944, and holding the unique distinction of being the only steam engine never retired by a North American major railroad.

They made the decision to have UP 844 push the broken-down freight all the way up to the pass between Cheyenne and Laramie... 50 some miles up hill.

    Gotta love torque!

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

I just spent 25 minutes on this! Fabulous! Cheyenne is about 9 hours from #1 daughter. Next time we're out I'm going to check the UP steam schedule. Hope we can fit it in.

My grandmother would travel to NY from California regularly by train to visit her daughter and NY business. Sometime around 1948 she and my aunt took the train with her red Oldsmobile convertible to NY then off to tour Europe. She didn’t like airplanes.

Around 2:50 into the video it shows the diesel engines, at least the front one is running, so perhaps the steam engine had a little help.

    Cool video, thanks for posting.
