    boston lightship struck by another ship, broken and leaking badly

    Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

    not yet concerned enough to ready the lifeboat atop the cabin
    a matter of fact they seem really unconcerned, steel boat, probably compartmentalized

    I would suspect that the reason for the unconcern is that the area of the hull that is compromised to the sea is a coal bunker and poses no risk to the ship's ability to stay afloat.
