    Default Playoff hockey!

Where I live we do not play hockey, but when my kids were growing up Mobile had a team in the ECHL, the Mobile Mysticks. They drew good crowds and even had a retail store selling all of their kit and it was fairly normal to see people walking around wearing Mysticks stuff. For whatever reason they were bought and moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia, where they became the Gwinnett Gladiators and reside there to this day.

My kids loved the Mysticks and we used to go six-eight times a year. I have been to two Colorado Av's games, and if I lived near there I'd most certainly go to more. I enjoy watching hockey from the arena very much, though not so much on television. Playoff hockey is widely considered to be the most exciting of sporting events in North America, and a game seven the most exciting thing of them all. As I have posted here many times my youngest kiddo lives in a suburb of Boston. Her longtime boyfriend is from California, and the two of them have turned into huge Bruins fans. They have jerseys, know all the players, and this year were able to get season tickets. When the Bruins played Toronto in Boston in their recent game seven she was sending me movies from her phone, and that place was about to explode. She has been going to Alabama football games with me since she was 12 (she is approaching 31) and told me last night that it was the most exciting thing she had ever been a part of. So cool.

What do you folks think of playoff hockey? My kid is crazy for the Bruins, but I have to say, if I had to pick a team it would be Colorado.

They have season tickets to the B's? Damn I don't even want to know what that costs!

The second round is when I can actually settle-in and ENJOY the playoffs. The first round is just a bit much, two games per night for two weeks, even though I don't even pretend to try to watch it all I still wind up sleep-deprived.
We seem to have established a tradition, however... as long as there is a canadian team still alive in the playoffs, littlegirl and I sing O Canada during bedtime teethbrushing.

I watched as many round one Jets games as I could. Sadly, they just didn't have the grit they showed last year, and they lost fair and square to the Blues. Game seven of the Leafs/Bruins series was pretty hot. I'm looking forward to taking in a few more games but I won't be watching all that many now there are no Canadian teams left. I love the fact that I can stream them without ads, though; I had given up watching hockey because of the advertising.

What are you doing about it?

That was a heck of a series, wasn't it? I'm a lifelong Blues fan and although I want to see them take the cup finally, its series like that one that make me a fan of the game.

I'm a lifelong hockey fan. Played it as a kid and into my twenties. Attended plenty of Rangers and Islanders games. Looking forward to the Islanders continued success this post-season. If they get knocked out, I'll still be tuning in, perhaps with less enthusiasm.

you're watching without ads... so what are they showing when the other outlets are running ads?

for the first week I kinda missed my old directv system because the dvr enabled the ad-skipping. Now I'm streaming via hulu/nbcsports and you can't skip through the ads. You can skip-ahead through the intermissions and such, but they still run all the ads before resuming the broadcast. So I've kinda gone oldschool and keep a crossword puzzle handy for the commercial breaks.

I am being told I misspoke. They have some kind of quarter-season package. They still go to almost every game but I am not sure where they are getting their non-season tickets. Maybe they know a guy.

They both have good incomes, no kids, live fiscally conservative lives....except for hockey. The kid also loves the New England Revolution of the MLS, but she says that the crowds are small and it's tough to get too fired up about them. In five years she has really come to love living in the Boston area, except for being away so far from family.

I would suggest that they attend some Providence Bruins games. It's 80% of the hockey at 10% of the cost (particularly when parking and dinner are factored in), and if they go to Foxboro for Revolution games they probably won't mind the extra ten minutes to Providence.

I think the B's are going to have a tough go against columbus. Columbus is rested and prepared, whereas the Leafs gave the B's all they could handle. Tough series to predict. Columbus could take it in 5, but if Boston can make it to game 7 they'll probably win.

I think the islanders will handle the canes.

The western conference... I can't predict those series at all. I can't stay up late enough to watch western conference games anymore.

You can stream the games through HULU...by signing up for the one-month free trial. Not that I am suggesting anything.

Vancouver is a hockey-mad town so the playoffs have been a vicarious thrill for us the past few seasons.
That said, the first round this year had some great series and unbelievable upsets.
Kevin, your Islanders are in a great position and the crowd at Nassau was incredible. Kind of sucks that they have to move back to Brooklyn for round two.

I'm currently in Columbus for work & dinner at a bar tonight with the BJ-Bruins game on was nuts.

I'm not a pro hockey fan - but have season tickets to Div. 1 Univ. of VT - so I generally prefer collitch. Seeing the game tonight with Columbus folks was kind of a fun change from being in New England & used to Bruins fans.

Watching it here Mickey; I'm in a remote location so we live-stream free, which is usually the NBC feed.

My Habs didn't make it, and now that the Leafs are gone the rest of my family and some friends can shut up and get on with a real life. Carolina sent the Stanley Cup champs golfing last night in a great Game 7, 2 overtime periods and the most deserving team won. With Tampa Bay and Calgary out she's all up for grabs now. Who wants it the most?

I understand your problem with watching the game on tv. Having played the game I understand where the off-screen players are supposed to be, so the flow of the game is more apparent even with the partial view of the ice surface. It would be difficult to watch without that knowledge. / Jim

I never played hockey but I did play basketball for 25-30 years.
Now I only have to watch the Raptors

Yeah, it was good hockey. I thought the Jets tried to play their game - speed and grind - but were a step behind for too much of the series, particularly in several key third periods. It's a beautiful game, though.

You can stream the games for free by googling "reddit nhl streams". However, I am unaware of the precise legal status of the streams, and of course I would never advocate copyright infringement.

I haven't watched hockey for many years. I used to play and attend as many games as I could. However, that was when I lived in Edmonton and I could watch Gretzky and the Oilers at their peak. Then I moved to Manitoba and kind of lost interest largely because the small isolated town I lived in only got TV via a satellite system and for some reason only Detroit TV stations. After that I moved to New Brunswick and quit watching hockey completely because we only got HABS games which I couldn't watch having developed my taste for hockey in Alberta.

    HDTV saved hockey for me.

I grew up playing, and would watch ANY game live. NHL, AHL, peewee, whatever. On TV I just couldn't stand it.
Then came HDTV and omigod you can actually SEE the puck... you can actually see what's going on away from the puck because the cameraman can back off a bit and show the whole zone... Total gamechanger.

Now I really don't like attending NHL games very much because of the damn TV-timeouts. They're even infecting some of the college games now grrrrrrrumblmumblemutter.

How far we have come. Growing up, we kids would watch games in my parent's basement on a 20-inch black and white TV.

I saw a very small number of games on a 14" BW tube when we lived in New Brunswick. Other than that, I didn't see much in the way of televised hockey until the 1980 Winter Olympics. We were down south that winter and my folks rented a big console colour TV, maybe 24", for the duration of the Games. Otherwise we usually didn't have a TV in the house even when down south, and up north there was no telephone, let alone TV.

We briefly had cable TV after I got married, as it came free with the apartment. That was the first year I watched the playoffs. Then we moved; no more cable.

I've mostly been more into international hockey than the NHL, probably because the Winter Olympics were a big deal for us growing up. My dad was a state champion skier and was on the Dartmouth ski team when it was coached by the guy who coached the national ski team; if his birth and marriage had been better timed, he might have been an Olympian. And we all figure skated and played hockey.

The big flat HD picture is indeed a revelation.

I started watching hockey with my Dad. We used to get CBC broadcasts from CKWS in Kingston then, and we would always watch "Hockey Night in Canada" every Saturday. They didn't even show the whole game at that time, it was joined "in progress" during the second period. I think the lead-in show was "Don Messer's Jubilee" but I could be wrong? Anyway, it was always the dulcet tones of Foster Hewitt calling the play -- "he shoots! he scores!" He was good, but my favorite play by play guy was Danny Gallivan, even though I hated the Habs, he was the best they'll ever be.

Now CKWS is no longer a CBC affiliate, and we can't get HNIC, other channels broadcast the games, but it's not the same. I even almost miss that airhole Don Cherry, almost.

In VT, I get CBC (Channel 6) from Montreal clear as a bell (broadcast). You're that much further away?

Nope, we’re too far west to get Montreal stations. We used the get snowy reception from Ottawa, but with digital now, that’s out too.

Good first period. The Isles have their work cut out for them, but they look reasonably well-matched.

Isles beat the 'Canes all four times they played in the regular season. Still, they looked good in that first period, seemed to be gelling better than NY. We'll see.
