    What's wrong with that?

    Nice...

(I was thinking about the drill press/mortise deal and for a one off like that you could probably but the mortise chisel in the chuck, align it and just use the press to force it through)

How would one put a mortise chisel into a regular drill chuck?

Slip it over an appropriate pin or a drill bit, all the chuck has to do is push on the chisel.

Of course. I'd forgotten about that center drill bit hole.

Seems like a properly sharpened, high quality chisel worked by hand would be a lot easier...?
It's truly remarkable what you can do with really sharp edge tools; it was a revelation for me (many years ago) when I first learned to properly sharpen- and use- edge tools. It's also one of the personals joys of woodworking (including boatbuilding.)

Start by using a good cordless drill to drill the hole. Then you can just use a three sided file or a chisel to make the square.
